So things have gotten worse since 2009? I looked up Fiji on Amnesty International's website. They don't like what is happening there for sure but wasn't sure how accurate they were and Wiki is depending on old info.

The "Public Order" decrees apparently include a provision that actions taken by the police, or by the military exercising police powers (itself an ominous development) are not subject to judicial oversight. IOW, citizens have no recourse to the courts against the police.

That is a problem. I am not sure what the best coarse of action is then. I guess education, by the people, and to let others around the world know what is going on there.

Only three possibilities for it getting better:

1) A Massive uprising, including a military defection, leading to civil war. Difficult because of the inability to gather in groups greater than three without being arrested, beaten, etc, and no recourse to the courts.

2) A long-term approach requiring a few young people to join the military, act as if they support it all, cut all ties to family and friends who aren't extremists, perpetuate acts of violence to show they are miltiary leaders, and then eventually gain enough power to effect a change in military policy slowly but surely. Risky business.

3) An outside force goes in and cleans up. Leaves isntability, but perhaps a clean slate. No world power is going to actually do this as long as Fijians aren't trying to threaten other countries.

Not a lot of options. I suppose the military could come to their senses adn treat people like fellow brothers and sisters with the rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness... but not likely.

Welp, it looks like we need to move in, remove another corrupt government, and spend the next decade putting down insurgents from the last regime and turning the nation into a glorious democracy.

Note to the rest of the world: Stop doing this. We may not have the resources to start a 4th nation-building exercise.
