In Jerome's Appendix to the Apocrypha we read,

"Thou shalt not eat of the fruit of the tree that is known to thee as the carrot tree for carrots are the devil's favorite food and were created in mockery of God's lovely turnip by Lucifer, the Son of the Morning, after the pattern of the perfect heavenly turnip."

In Genesis, there are two distinct creation stories derived from separate mythological sources, So in his translation of the Bible, Joseph Smith interpreted one of those creation myths as a "spiritual" creation, while interpreting the second as a "physical" creation. I think Smith's twist on Genesis is about as close as the Bible comes. The idea of earthly things patterned on a spiritual ideal is probably attributable to Plato.

Hebrews 8:

5 Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount.

Hebrews 9:

23 It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.

Thanks so far. However I thought there was a scripture that talked about "everything" here on earth was patterned in Heaven.

I thought you said just from the Bible. If you want to include all LDS scripture, here are some more:

Genesis 5:

1 This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him

D&C 77:

2 Q. What are we to understand by the four beasts, spoken of in the same verse?

A. They are figurative expressions, used by the Revelator, John, in describing heaven, the paradise of God, the happiness of man, and of beasts, and of creeping things, and of the fowls of the air; that which is spiritual being in the likeness of that which is temporal; and that which is temporal in the likeness of that which is spiritual; the spirit of man in the likeness of his person, as also the spirit of the beast, and every other creature which God has created.

D&C 128:

13 Consequently, the baptismal font was instituted as a similitude of the grave, and was commanded to be in a place underneath where the living are wont to assemble, to show forth the living and the dead, and that all things may have their likeness, and that they may accord one with another—that which is earthly conforming to that which is heavenly, as Paul hath declared, 1 Corinthians 15:46, 47, and 48

Moses 6:

63 And behold, all things have their likeness, and all things are created and made to bear record of me, both things which are temporal, and things which are spiritual; things which are in the heavens above, and things which are on the earth, and things which are in the earth, and things which are under the earth, both above and beneath: all things bear record of me.

Not exactly talking about creation but Hebrews 9:23 says regarding covenants "It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these."

The scriptures which speak of the Lord's will being done in earth, as it is in heaven seem to imply a similar pattern. It just seems logical that there had to be a basis for the design of earth.

Hebrews 8-9 is a good example of the Platonic thinking that I referred to in my earlier post. This is the idea that for every material thing on the earth, there is a perfect and ideal form in the eternal realm. You would expect this idea to appear only in parts of the Bible that post-dated Plato.

I think that neither Paul nor the Bible got any ideas from Plato.

Paul didn't write the Epistle to the Hebrews. Whoever did write it, however, lived in the Roman empire and was obviously influenced by Hellenistic culture and thinking, at least as much as modern Mormons are influenced by the Enlightenment.

You are welcome to your theories; but don't expect everyone else to accept them.
