coolrok7 Posted September 21, 2011 Posted September 21, 2011 The Gospel (or Good News) as it is stated by the apostle Paul (called personally to ministry by Jesus, confirmed by the apostle Peter):Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures (1 Corinthians 15:1-4)So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also. For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, the just shall live by faith. (Romans 1:15-17)And when we all had fallen to the ground, I heard a voice speaking to me and saying in the Hebrew language, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me? It is hard for you to kick against the goads.’ So I said, ‘Who are You, Lord?’ And He said, ‘I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. But rise and stand on your feet; for I have appeared to you for this purpose, to make you a minister and a witness both of the things which you have seen and of the things which I will yet reveal to you. I will deliver you from the Jewish people, as well as from the Gentiles, to whom I now send you, to open their eyes, in order to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who are sanctified by faith in Me.’ (Acts 26:14-18)Therefore, beloved, looking forward to these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, without spot and blameless; and consider that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation—as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given to him, has written to you, as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which untaught and unstable people twist to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures. (2 Peter 3:14-16)The above Biblical definition of the Gospel is the standard of measurement when examining the claims of any group, which claims to be “Christian” in their belief.

Franktalk Posted September 21, 2011 Posted September 21, 2011 Zakuska,Will you be going into Chap 10 and 11 where the Jews and the believing gentiles are described by God in terms relating to the blindness of the Jews and the responsibilities of the non-blind gentiles?
coolrok7 Posted September 22, 2011 Posted September 22, 2011 As we have seen Coolrock Paul didn't stop at Faith... he knew better than that, what the complete Doctrine of Christ was.See Evangelicals need to be retaught what the first principles of the oracles of God are... They love mama's milk and never are able to make it to the meat, because they trip and fall on the first principle. So let me remind you what the first four principles of the Gospel are.The Reformation understanding of Faith alone, Grace alone, Scripture alone is not about being by itself in the normal connotation but in regards to how one is Justified in Christ, before God as God can look at the heart condition while we can’t when it comes to others. This to be clear is not intended to, “stop at Faith” but one is to come to a mature understanding in the Biblical faith, “delivered to the saints” and what it encompasses:For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil. (Hebrews 5:12-14)These things as you’ve stated them I already know and have known for a long time (I have no problem with being reminded) in which in the above context is talking about maturity and also about discerning things based on that maturity. Mature Evangelicals don’t need to be taught the basics as we already know them. I’m addressing the issue behind the reason for the statement of the thread that has to do with the EV point of view (which needs to be understood correctly, I don’t see that it very often is if at all). As I said in my last post:. . .The above Biblical definition of the Gospel is the standard of measurement when examining the claims of any group, which claims to be “Christian” in their belief. If one doesn’t have the correct Biblical Gospel (or another, or false one), then the rest of it is irrelevant:Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures (1 Corinthians 15:1-4)What you’ve quoted from Romans so far is just fine as I quote from it often myself. But in all you’ve posted so far you haven’t quoted where Paul actually identifies the specifics of the Gospel itself, the Good News!It is a given to me that the outlined steps are a part of the process of coming to faith, brought about through the message preached and the Holy Spirit convicting the person who needs to remedy their sinful condition before God. The proper response is required inclusive of what is Biblically taught. The Good News is that as the result of the Gospel, one is saved. Accomplished by grace through faith, the gift of God, not of works as Paul says. That Jesus, died, was buried, and then resurrected. Belief in that Gospel is what saves one from an eternal or everlasting punishment!:But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report? So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. (Romans 10:8-17)And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in h***. (Matthew 10:28)When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats: And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: . . .Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: . . .And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal. (Matthew 25:31-34, 41, 46)

But some Antinomians of today interpret this to mean that anything we DO is also excluded. They forget that God does have requirements, requirements that aren't even stated in the Law and therefore cannot be excluded.Several examples of Abraham life are used and every single one of them include hearing God and obeying what he commanded. God told Abraham to go impregnate his wife even though he knew they both were well past age. He didn't stumble, he went and DID. Sometimes even doing things that he vocally commanded even if they seemed to go against what he had previously commanded in the written word. (eg. "Thou Shalt not Kill" vs "Hey Abraham, it's time to go kill your son on an Altar".) That was Faith. So Faith isn't just some mental assent. Its a deep inner conviction and a change of heart. What you’ve quoted from Romans so far is just fine as I quote from it often myself. ckonrad Posted September 23, 2011 Posted September 23, 2011 i went to a mormon church for about 4 months and took the classes there to see what it was like and had missionaries come over like every other day.. and was taught that mormons believe they are meriting their salvation and that they were their own saviors and that it was evil to trust in christ alone for salvation. I recall one of them quoting Hinckley where he states that it is a most evil and pernicious doctrine to trust in christ alone as savior so i am just going by what i learned at that church.
Calm Posted September 23, 2011 Posted September 23, 2011 Nothing like being told what you beleive by another anonymous poster. We don't believe we merit salvation either. We merit exaltation. No, we don't do that either. Merit means that we somehow deserve exaltation. Since only those who are sinless, perfect and pure before the Lord all on their own deserve exaltation, there is only one man who has ever merited exaltation and it is through his Gift of the Atonement that we receive it from him. What we do is prepare ourselves to receive the Gift, but in no way does that imply that God owes it to us any more than someone who tells another that he will give him one million dollars if he comes for a visit somehow owes the one who shows up on his doorstep a penny; one might call it a conditional gift...I'll have to think about that.

ckonrad Posted September 23, 2011 Posted September 23, 2011 well regardless of what your beliefs are i don't need to go through your church to receive the holy spirit, i already have it, according to christ anyone can have the gift of the spirit simply for asking for it, God doesn't withhold gifts from his children. i simply do good works because i am experiencing healing of sin in my life and when i get to heaven i will be like God because i will see him as he is. People don't need to go through your president or the pope for that matter, they can go directly to christ. I couldn't stand going to that mormon church there was an alarm going off in me telling me to get out and the more i got involve with mormonism the more negative i felt, i'm glad to be done with it. my perpose in responding to your post was just to help you understand that faith alone isn't an argument against good works i have never met another protestant that is against good works, those that continue in sin without conscience have neither seen nor known christ every protestant knows that. go to a baptist or lutheran church they are all about serving the lord by doing good.
Calm Posted September 23, 2011 Posted September 23, 2011 Then why did it take you four months to listen to the alarm the spirit was sending you? Most sola fide believers would agree with you in my experience but there are at least a few that claim to be that also claim there is no harm to their soul to continue sinning without regret. There are also some critics who are so concerned to put as much distance between LDS beliefs and their own that they downplay the value of good works based in faith in our lives.
ckonrad Posted September 23, 2011 Posted September 23, 2011 the reason why it took four months is because i made friends their and felt pressured by social connections to stay for longer than i wanted, i finally told them that it wasn't for me and left. yes there are non christians that use pseudo faith in christ as an excuse to sin but no person with genuine faith would do that...are you arguing that those people are christians? if so then you are the one that believes a person can continue in sin and still be called a christian not me, i don't believe those people are christians.

I might at times believe they are not very good Christians or very tradional or very orthodox or very informed or very spiritual or rotten at witnessing of the Gospel, but that does not mean they aren't Christians according to the way the vast majority of the world uses the word and as far as I can tell the way it is used in the scriptures.I do not equate being Christian with being saved though I understand a small subset (percentage wise) of Christianity do so. LeSellers Posted September 23, 2011 Posted September 23, 2011 Faith alone is not an argument against doing good works i don't know why mormons think that all the time.Because of what people on your side tell us again and again.I have read, in the usenet (now Google news) forum, alt.religion, mormon, that doing anything, even trying to follow any moral law, is an affront to Christ because it, according to the writer I allude to, it shows Him that the person doesn’t trust Jesus and His Atoning work. This example may be extreme, but it was only extreme, not off the reservation. In fact, it is not even the ultimate extreme—Calvinism (although not all Calvinists) tells us that not only are works not necessary, but even the most vilest of sinners, if he is among the “chosen”, is guaranteed salvation, while the most godly of men, if he is not one of the elite, will burn forever in a lake of fire and brimstone. When a person has a living faith in Christ they are saved while they have that living faith however they also will receive healing of sin from christ, Yet Christ says, for instance, we must be baptized. Notice, by example, that the “Great Commission” (not given to the general membership of His Church, but to the Apostles alone), that their charge was not to call people to “accept” Christ, but to baptize them.when a person is being healed of sin the natural result is to do good, if i am being healed of my greed i become more giving,Yet one actually becomes a giving person by giving, not by trumpeting how benevolent one is. Christ may heal us (and we all agree He does), but not giving (or doing good in any form) leaves us failing to be generous.if i am healed of my hate i become more loving etc.One becomes charitable by loving. One becomes truthful by telling (and doing) the truth. A faithful man exercises faith, which is not only the mark of faith, but it is what makes him faithful. We receive that healing through faith and since we don't receive it in any other way, we say we receive it through faith alone...or only faith or sola fide whatever term you want to use."For what doth it profit a man if he is given a gift and he receiveth not the gift which is bestowed upon him."we believe that faith without works is dead just as you do we just don't believe that our works save us, our works aren't the way the truth and the life christ is...Yet you imply that we believe our works do save us. This is false, utterly and irrevocably false. We believe that faith alone is not sufficient because, as the Bible tells us, devils believe and tremble.we don't believe we are our own saviors in any way or form.Nor do we. You are insinuating false witness against us.If you have a disease and go to the doctor to get a cure you are healed through the cure alone that isn't an argument against being healed is it? just because we use that word alone doesn't mean we are against anything. And because we don’t use it does not mean we are against anything, either. Indeed, the first principle of the Gospel, according to our Articles of Faith, is “faith in the Lord, Jesus Christ”.Your religious leaders simply take the phrase faith alone and put it into a negative semantic context its part of your goal to demonize all other denominations of christianity as abominations while expecting us to treat you differently. We do not (ordinarily) “demonize” any other denomination as an “abomination”. Where do you get this erroneous idea? I inserted “ordinarily” because there may be a rare Saint who does, but it simply is not a teaching of the Church. We take this phrase, “faith alone”, and put it in exactly the same context as they do who use it.“Sola fede”, in the usage your side uses it, means that nothing we do can possibly be of any use, that the Lord will not account it in the least. Yet to arrive at that conclusion, one must reject a myriad of biblical scripture that demands that we do things, specific things,We also believe that it is by grace that we are saved. No matter how much we do, even were there a completely righteous Saint, one who never sinned in his entire life (and it has never happened, so don’t misuse this hypothesis), he could not enter heaven without the grace of Jesus Christ. We all know this, and we are pleased to tell anyone who will listen. But the man with the greatest faith, but who never acted on that faith, will not enter the kingdom because he did not exercise his faith: he did not follow the injunction of Christ: If ye love me, keep my commandments.Lehi 1
