One could say the same thing of murder, that a person who commits murder may not be rsponsible for his or her acts and only God can judge such a matter.

First, I don't care for the "platitude" that God will not give us more than we can bear... People have breakdowns all the time, some leading to suicide... others mental and/or emotional depending upon what they have had to bear.

Second, in regard to Jeff's comment that only God can judge such a matter as murder... he already has judged it... it is the unpardonable sin... however, I do believe that God will judge the murderer fairly and take into consideration all aspects, i.e., mental/emotional health, etc. But for the person who murders out of rage, hate, greed, evil... the judgment has been made, but even s/he will be judged fairly.

What does it look like when one is given more than they can bear? There’s plenty of middle ground to consider that’s not as dramatic as suicide. Do I spend too much time on bishopric duties to the detriment of my family? Do I stop paying tithing to save my house from foreclosure? Do I require depression medication to cope with my daily life? Do I lose faith in God because my wife died from cancer? Do I have a son that’s in trouble with the law and I feel I have no way to help him? There are many examples where I have no good solution to a problem. If I reach the point where I want to scream have I reached the threshold that we are discussing? Was I given “too much to bear?” I’m not too clear on the basic definition here.

It depends on how one views his relationship with God. Some see it as "God will not give us more than we can bear, period", and some see it as "God will not give us more than we can bear provided we have faith in Christ." In either case, some think they can tell what that point is for themselves and/or for others, and some think that only God knows what that point is. In a similar vein, some think that they determine that point, and some think that God does. That said, someone can take a bullet to the chest that was too much to bear and so die, but his spirit may have been faithful unto life eternal.
