I know this is not the only plates found, but being on the front page of yahoo.com may get a lot of viewers. What do you folks think?
Lareliw Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 Depends on the type of plates, the language used in the plates, the date the plates are from, where the plates were found, and their corroboration with other methods of scholarship (archaeology, etc)
BCSpace Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 I don't think it'll have any significant impact on conversion, belief, or activity. For it be in any way effective, it would have to be presented in the context of the golden plates and then you would have informed people wondering about 600-700 years earlier which is where in time oe would want to see such things in BoM context.
USU78 Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 They're've been 2 other threads on the subject. Consensus seems to be "Wait and See," since the tentative date of production seems to be right, but there's a rumor going on that volga picked up on that there was a late Byzantine guy's name in the lead booklet.'Course, there might be two guys with the same name . . . WAY too early to tell anything for certain.USU "Post-Temple-1st-Century-CE does not necessarily have relevance for Post-Temple-Sixth-Century-BCE" 78

What do you folks think?I think it helps vindicate the faithful, but I do not think it will provide the "proof" that some desire to take that first step in faith, only the Holy Ghost can give that.

Bar Yohai became a significant messianic, apocalyptic and theurgic figure in the twilight of Byzantine rule in Palestine. Of course the plates could be earlier if they were genuine. I'm just hazarding a guess.
rameumptom Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 One problem is we do not know enough about the plates. We're not even sure if they are authentic. Those possessing the plates have not allowed scholars to look closely at them yet, and so most of what we are experiencing is a bunch of media hype.I think we will have to wait until the plates are allowed out into the wild, where scholars can examine it from all angles before we can determine if there really is any value to them.
dirtius maximus Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 Even if the plates mention Jesus, Son of Mary Only begotten of the Father, it still only shows that the "legend" of Jesus was put on metal plates, so I would say the plates do not demonstrate much.as I asked in another thread on this topic:Can anyone offer an explanation what the "text" appears to be raised text rather than text that is inscribed or pressed into the plates?
mfbukowski Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 My bet is that these are symbolic memory devices with interpretations only known to a few.Whatever they say or show, it will be debatable.Everything always is, otherwise this board would not exist! The only evidence that counts on spiritual matters is spiritual evidence.
mfbukowski Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 Can anyone offer an explanation what the "text" appears to be raised text rather than text that is inscribed or pressed into the plates?Dunno really, but that effect can be achieved by placing wire on a plate of similar material and heating the plate and the wire causing the wire to partially melt into the plate. That would be especially easy with lead and lead wire- get the plates up to around 800 degrees and it's done. I have done that with wire solder on a copper plate- it is an interesting effect with the silver tones contrasted with the copper background. All you'd need is a blowtorch today, or in ancient times, a hot fire with a bellows would work just fine.
