cion Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 Please rate your current belief in God using my scale of 1 to 10. A score of 10 indicates that when you get to heaven and you realize God is not there, you cry in anger, "I was tricked and deceived into believing with every fiber of my being he really existed!" A score of 1 indicates that when you get to heaven and realize God is indeed there, you cry in anger "God, you tricked me. I was totally and utterly convinced you did not exist!"A 5 means that (assuming God is there) you will pause and say, "Ah well, I could have gone either way, but now that I see he really is there, it makes some sense. Luckily, I'm not too concerned about my earthly doubts because God didn't make it exactly clear either way."Thank you!
Doctrine 612 Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 cion:I don't understand your poll.sounds like no matter what we choose we cast a shadow upon our belife in god, I will not vote.
thesometimesaint Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 Doctrine 612:I was hoping it wasn't a "Gotcha" poll. You're are probably right though.
cion Posted February 9, 2011 Author Posted February 9, 2011 I'm baffled. How is this a "gotcha poll"? 10 = your belief in God is solid as stone1 = your belief in no God is solid as stoneI was just curious. Thanks.
blueadept Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 Wow. If you're a Christian, what's the point of such a poll? I'll abstain.
thesometimesaint Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 cion:"Please rate your current belief in God using my scale of 1 to 10.A score of 10 indicates that when you get to heaven and you realize God is not there, you cry in anger, "I was tricked and deceived into believing with every fiber of my being he really existed!"A score of 1 indicates that when you get to heaven and realize God is indeed there, you cry in anger "God, you tricked me. But then it says there is no God. In LDS land. No God = No Immortality, and No Heaven. Your poll so far is oxymoronic at least as LDS understand it. On to the second question. In LDS land God doesn't trick anyone. But he does allow us to fool ourselves. We call it Agency, the right to chose whatever you want to believe. Do you see why the LDS would have difficulty with such a poll? If you want to measure spirituality on a scale of 1-10 for the LDS readers. Simply have Atheist as 1 and 10 as TBM.

Why does every choice have to have anger invloved? I know there is a God and I know I shall not be angry when I meet Him. Why would God trick people?
cion Posted February 9, 2011 Author Posted February 9, 2011 That's not what you said in your OP. Why does every choice have to have anger invloved? I know there is a God and I know I shall not be angry when I meet Him. Why would God trick people?ah. OK. I see my error in the OP now. Sorry about that. I guess we can throw this poll in the garbage. Regarding your question about anger - would you not be angry if you got up there and realized you were very, very wrong all your life after you had been so completely convinced? It wouldn't be a lasting anger. Maybe just a few minutes with only one or maybe two swear words then the venting would be done and life would continue.
Jeff K. Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 Not sure how to measure it. Would I deny God? What did Peter do? Have I been tested to that point? Perhaps I have and have failed or perhaps I have not, and presently I am not aware of it. I will keep trying and hope for the best.
thesometimesaint Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 cion:It would be actually a pretty good poll if you tweaked it a bit. When I die and there is no God. I'll not know any different than the Atheist who dies and there is no God. When I die and God is different than I believe he is. I'm good to go because God won't do anything bad to me for some mistaken idea about him I have. When I die, and he is how the LDS believe he I'm still good to go. When I die and God is how the EV's believe he is, and I'm sent to hell simply because I'm LDS, at least I'll be among friends.
Jason Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 When I die and God is how the EV's believe he is, and I'm sent to hell simply because I'm LDS, at least I'll be among friends. But they keep saying that all you need is to accept Jesus as your savior. Since I do that I should be fine.
thesometimesaint Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 Jason:True enough, but I thought we had to believe in the "right" version (their particular version) of Jesus.
mmmcounts Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 lol @ the the phrase LDS Land....I hadn't heard that before! Is that a common phrase? And where is it in relation to Mormon Country, I wonder?
thesometimesaint Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 mmmcounts:TTBOMK it is original to me.
Questing Beast Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 My belief in "God" is rock solid as my belief in Existence in the first place. I am typing this, so I Exist. End of discussion on that philosophical point. But I cannot vote in this poll because my concept of "God" does not fit the criteria. And I do not believe in heaven or hell....

Though I am an atheist, I do not hold that atheism is absolute truth. It is simply the point that I have arrived at after observing life for thirty-seven years (the first 25 of which were spent as an active LDS member). I have no qualms in admitting that I could be completely wrong about the whole thing.
Nathair/|\ Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 Do I need to use my catchphrase?Yes, Jason, I think you do. I have rarely seen a poll that needed it as much. Now, his revised categories in post 5 improve it slightly, enough that I was able to participate.
rodheadlee Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 ah. I guess, but I just don't see it that way. I think I have a good relationship with God. I suppose I could be hallucinating with my ears all these years. It hasn't been my whole life but a good portion of it. Sometimes I can't hear the answer when I pray and it's usually my fault. Sometimes I don't like the answer and it takes a bit of time to figure out why He answered the way He did. I just need to do more, do my Temple work or I'll be ashamed when I see Him. I just need to quit smoking, what a crummy addiction. I hope it doesn't take a terminal disease to get me to quit. I don't want to die and leave my wife to fend for herself. I would really be uptight but how could I be angry, it would be my own fault.
Libs Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 Rod, I had to quite smoking (many years ago). It's not easy, but with God's help it's not impossible. Use Him to help you...He will, I promise. As for the OP, I didn't vote, but I would probably be about a 7 or 8 in faith and belief (on a scale of 10). Twelve years ago, I would have been a one, so I've come some distance from there, thanks to God nudging me along.
Jeff K. Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 I think the question of communication is important and intersting. For instance does it have to be words? Or just a feeling? Or does it come in a sign we interpret? We have seen all three used and the experiences of one with such an activity can be different from the person who is right there at the time doing likewise. I do not think most revelatory experiences strengthen your belief in God, at least not long term, but a spiritual experience can be more powerful than a physical experience. At least from my experience.

Or are you talking about learning of someone else's revelation (like Joseph Smith's first vision)?
