ElderDarionBevan Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 we have many people look at us like we are crazy when we tell them about the message of the Restoration. Is it a crazy story? is it too hard to Believe? My answer is NO, God is a god of miracles. Those of you who are converts please share about your first reaction to the message of the restoration. Hamba Tuhan Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 Our truth claims are indeed crazy...right up to the point where one experiences them for him-/herself. Then everything changes.Joseph Smith, in the King Follett discourse: 'If I had not experienced what I have, I should not have believed it myself.'I second that.
mapman Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 I think that it is easier to believe than some of the stories in the Old Testament. What's different with Mormonism is that it was founded so recently. A lot of people don't think that what happened to Joseph Smith could happen at the same time as the industrial revolution. This attitude is understandable but not really logical. If God could send angels in times past then he could send them now. If God could give revelations and scriptures to ancient prophets then he could give them to modern prophets.

Calm Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 we have many people look at us like we are crazy when we tell them about the message of the Restoration. Is it a crazy story? is it too hard to Believe? My answer is NO, God is a god of miracles. Those of you who are converts please share about your first reaction to the message of the restoration. To learn more about why people think we are crazy when sharing this message please check out this link Too hard to believeElder, may I make a suggestion to make your posts not only more of a fit for the overall purpose and formatting of this board, but also more visually appealing? If I were you, when including a link to your blog in your posts, I would set it apart from the main discussion aspect. This will make it more obvious that it is not necessary to read the blog to respond to your comments as well as make it appear less like the reason you are posting the topic is to drive up traffic to your blog. It is my experience that most posters of this board (and perhaps readers as well) want to have the topics nicely packaged in the thread itself, links are to provide additional information not required to understand or enjoy what is being discussed and if it looks like the main discussion is going to be elsewhere or to be an informed participant in the thread one is going to have to read something off board first, they will just skip the whole thing and may even start avoiding your threads altogether. Also if you finish up with a link to read, then any other requests may end up taking second seat or even forgotten. In this thread, it would have been much better to provide a separation between the request to post one's own experiences and the link so that readers understand the main purpose of the thread is to get their POVs and the request is not a side issue, but to be the main topic of conversation....not what is in the link. Also when making a request for personal experience, you should post your own where appropriate in the thread, not relying on your blog to provide that info as (again) that makes it seem like you are trying to divert traffic to your blog rather than engaging in discussion on the board. If your blog is primarily just a reposting of another link, such as the President Erying talk IIRC, then it would be polite and politic to provide the original link first (in the case cited, to lds.org) and then add yours if desired as a place for further discussion on aspects you are not intending to cover in the thread.I would do this by making a division of several lines after the main text of your comment and then adding something like this in a different font and colour than the rest of the post:Text of post including specification on what is to be discussed in the thread...several lines to divide content from 'added info and discussion link'....*****for an expanded discussion, please check out this link and even join in: place link hereAlso it might be a good idea to provide a short quote from your blog to give an whet the appetite rather than just the link itself, but again don't make it the main thrust of your post...if you want to do that, then include the quote in the main text for people to respond to in the thread rather than having to go to your blog.
Monster Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 Today it may be crazy for the average person to believe in such things. At the founding of the church however stories such as this were more widely accepted. There was more acceptance of magical thinking at the time. So stories of angels and plates and revelation would have had more appeal to the average person. A crazy idea does not make it wrong but it makes it much harder to believe.

nicolasconnault Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 3 Nephi 2:1-31 And it came to pass that thus passed away the ninety and fifth year also, and the people began to forget those signs and wonders which they had heard, and began to be less and less astonished at a sign or a wonder from heaven, insomuch that they began to be hard in their hearts, and blind in their minds, and began to disbelieve all which they had heard and seen
Monster Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 can any man come up with a more perfect plan of family.happiness? Yes easily, but that would be for me. For you maybe not.

Mormons belive in a book called the Book of Mormon which is an supposed historical account of the peoples in America. Fact, bottom line, point blank in your face is...this is false. PERIOD.
Tango Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 can any man come up with a more perfect plan of family.happiness? YES, freedom in JESUS CHRIST and NOT in Joseph Smith, and a so called fake mormon prophet, Temple non-sense that binds you to something NOT of God. Get real. I am ex-mormon and can tell you I have never experienced soo much freedom in Christ. His word is wonderful. Mormons word and that world is bondadge.Mormons are doing things because the HAVE TO (otherwise no temple recommend, no family in eternity....Christians are doing things because THEY WANT TO. A huge difference.

Then everything changes.Joseph Smith, in the King Follett discourse: 'If I had not experienced what I have, I should not have believed it myself.'I second that.Funny, that is what people say who have been abducted by aliens. Or the countless current so called prophets who claim to seen God and started a religion. No sorry, if you claim to be a prophet, then back it up..or shut up. Mormons have never backed it up.
TAO Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 Your being confused with the message of Jesus Christ, and the message of the Mormons. Mormons belive in a book called the Book of Mormon which is an supposed historical account of the peoples in America. Fact, bottom line, point blank in your face is...this is false. TAO Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 YES, freedom in JESUS CHRIST and NOT in Joseph SmithThat's what the church teaches =P.and a so called fake mormon prophet, Temple non-sense that binds you to something NOT of God. Get real. I am ex-mormon and can tell you I have never experienced soo much freedom in Christ. His word is wonderful. Mormons word and that world is bondadge. Are you not bound by your desire to attack the church? You seem not to be able to leave it behind you. You are just as bound, it seems to me.Mormons are doing things because the HAVE TO (otherwise no temple recommend, no family in eternity....Christians are doing things because THEY WANT TO. A huge difference.I am Mormon because I want to, and I do Mormon things because I want to =). So again, I CFR that statement. Please provide more support behind your assertions. Thanks.
TAO Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 Funny, that is what people say who have been abducted by aliens.Have you ever talked to a person who is blind about what it is like to not see? And what of a person whose blindness was removed form them surgically. They will tell you the same thing.Or the countless current so called prophets who claim to seen God and started a religion. The Jews thought Christ was doing this. Does that make him any less of a prophet or a God?No sorry, if you claim to be a prophet, then back it up..or shut up. Mormons have never backed it up.I request that you back up your claim that Mormon prophets are not prophets. You have never backed that up.

ElderDarionBevan Posted February 7, 2011 Author Posted February 7, 2011 My opinion is that the story is miraculous, it is incredible. This is the message we teach people everyday and they think it is incredible, what is even more incredible is that they come to the point where they cannot deny it's truthfullness
keithb Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 When was the last angel sighting? And I'm not talking about in grilled cheese sandwiches or oil spills. The angel Moroni appeared to me as a werewolf one night when I was walking to my car. He chased me into the woods, pulled out a flaming sword, and swore that he'd kill me within 24 hours if I didn't start practicing polygamy. True story. What? You don't believe it's true? Well, he also told me that there is unity in the universe. How does that make you feel? Good? See, I'm telling the truth. What? Still don't believe me? Well, go pray about it. If you don't receive an answer, it's because you lack faith (and God will condemn you to hell for your unbelief).
keithb Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 Pardon me Monster, but would you care to define "magical thinking?"And having done so, would you please explain its relationship to "angels and plates and revelation?"Regards,PahoranPahoran = deliberately obtuse about simple points. While he's at it, he should also define the meaning of the words "define", "sexual relations", and "is" for you so that we don't have any misunderstandings here.

How many people have you actually converted that did not already have a underlying belief in God, Jesus, angels and miracles? Mormonisms is not such a big step from traditional Christianity as for example converting from Christianity to Scientology.
