Rob Bowman Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 Can anyone direct me to where I can find the following resource:Welch, John W., and Tim Rathbone. "The Translation of the Book of Mormon: Basic Historical Information." Provo: FARMS, 1986.The above is reportedly a lengthy (30+ pages) study, and is often cited in reference to the timeline of the translation of the Book of Mormon. I cannot seem to find it online, although I can find their shorter article in the Encyclopedia of Mormonism.

They have a complete collection of books and articles about the Church and by members of the Church. Unfortunately, they do not, as yet, have their index on line.Larry P
Rob Bowman Posted January 21, 2011 Author Posted January 21, 2011 Larry,I'm nowhere near SLC. Since the paper was a FARMS newsletter piece, I'm wondering if anyone here associated with FARMS or the Maxwell Institute might have a copy they can scan and shoot my way. I wouldn't ask, but I keep running into books and articles that cite that 1986 paper. You might try the new Church History Library in SLC. Another possibility is to contact John Welch himself at the BYU Law School and see what he says.

I do have children in Utah so get a chance to go to the Church History Library occasionally.I found the same thing about quotes, they are all over the place. You would think that someone would have at least scanned the paper and made it available.Larry P

It is a chapter in the book edited by John W. Welch, ed., Opening the Heavens: Accounts of Divine Manifestations, 1820-1844 (Documents in Latter-Day Saint History) (BYU Press, 2005), which you can get through Deseret Book, but I understand that a paperback version will be out this year, after which it will be available online also.

He is no longer a Latter-day Saint. Not long ago he and Kerry Shirts got into a rather hostile discussion over this very subject (and Hugh Nibley's 'methodologies'). While I can't speak for Tim, I'm sure there are things he wrote 25 years ago that he no longer supports. Jack Welch on the other hand will probably stand by it.

Rob Bowman Posted January 25, 2011 Author Posted January 25, 2011 Robert,Thanks for pointing out that the chapter in Opening the Heavens is a longer and more recent version of the FARMS paper. I have the book already, so I'm good to go.The piece you want is not available online, but the longer (137 pages) and more complete version is: You can download it from BYU Studies for $2 at http://byustudies.by...aspx?title=7943 (subscribers can download free). Jack Welch on the other hand will probably stand by it.I was there at the writing of the Welch & Rathbone paper all those years ago, and saw both authors on a daily basis and thoroughly examined the documents they were gathering. The documents are fairly straightforward and tell their own story. I have seen or read nothing which would call into question the primary conclusions reached in their paper.Rathbone later bore false witness about his contribution to that common effort, after he went off the deep end. It is a very sad story which cannot be retold here.

Fifth Columnist Posted January 27, 2011 Posted January 27, 2011 Rathbone later bore false witness about his contribution to that common effort, after he went off the deep end. It is a very sad story which cannot be retold here. When you say he "went off the deep end" are you referring to just his apostasy or did he do something else (beyond drinking coffee, alcohol, and other things that most normal people do but Mormons view as a major sin)?

Drinking and driving (or beating your wife and children in that condition) is a major sin since it endangers the lives of others. However, I do not know whether Rathbone has ever even tasted coffee or booze."Normal people" do a great many things which I would not regard as "going off the deep end."
