Demosthenes Posted July 1, 2010 Posted July 1, 2010 Have you heard of Rod Meldrum and the FIRM foundation? Rod is a highly accredited and extremely respected geneticist. He is a member of the church and he has spent the past ten years or so researching DNA models that support the Book of Mormon. He collected data from all over South, Central, and North America. He discovered that a small remnant of a tribe in the Midwest of the US has Hebrew DNA markers. It's pretty interesting research, all of it very scholarly and peer reviewed by non member geneticists. It's the most solid model I've seen so far, it's not very flashy or focused on marketing because none of these guys are sales people at all, they're all nerdy microbiologists and what they say is pretty dry, but the conclusions are really interesting and pretty convincingly support, not just with DNA but also with archeology, history, geography, and geology, the Book of Mormon happening in that area. Here is the website, I recommend buying the DVD's they're really cheap and they explain everything in detail, but I guess you can also find them on YouTube for free. My link
Daniel Peterson Posted July 1, 2010 Posted July 1, 2010 Have you heard of Rod Meldrum and the FIRM foundation? Rod is a highly accredited and extremely respected geneticist. He is?That's news to me, and, I'm sure, will be news to him, too.he has spent the past ten years or so researching DNA models that support the Book of Mormon. He collected data from all over South, Central, and North America. He did? He discovered that a small remnant of a tribe in the Midwest of the US has Hebrew DNA markers.Really? It's pretty interesting research, all of it very scholarly and peer reviewed by non member geneticists. Can you supply references to the scholarly journals and books in which it has appeared? Or, at least, to scholarly publications of this research? Not to a video, but to a solid, footnoted academic paper or book? It's the most solid model I've seen so far, it's not very flashy or focused on marketing because none of these guys are sales people at all, they're all nerdy microbiologistsYou're joking, right? I mean, really. You're pulling our legs, having us on.
Bernard Gui Posted July 1, 2010 Posted July 1, 2010 I was merely making an observation that some of the Nephites survived the war of extinction... but....shrug.....All of the Lehites survived the war of extinction. The Lamanites in the final wars were not necessarilydescendants of Laman and Lemuel. Others were descendants of the Mulekites or a mixture ofboth Lehites and Mulekites. Who knows what their DNA looks like?Bernard

Oh so you are saying that it was the Nephites who were destroyed, but some Mulekites survived?Where does it say that? I missed it I guess
Demosthenes Posted July 1, 2010 Posted July 1, 2010 Yes he is well respected. And yes his work is peer reviewed, actually his current book is the most peer reviewed book in Deseret Book right now. You obviously have no idea of what you're talking about, his heartland model has received the approval of every relevant scientist he has presented it to and is on track to become the now accepted model. And your arrogance puts your ignorance on display even more so than your sarcasm. I guess that's why I haven't visited this website in about 7 years now, full of people like you. You reminded me of why I decided to move on, thank you. And I guess you'll still be here in 7 years so I'll speak to you then champ.

No defense of the claim that he's a nerd with no background in sales. Mere assertions that his heartland model is accepted by every(unnamed)body and is about to take over the world, that his book is the most peer-reviewed in Deseret Book (which is almost certainly false, but could at least have benefited from a nod in the direction of supporting evidence), that I'm ignorant, and that I'm arrogant.Rigorous reasoning and solid evidence, delivered in an endearingly Christian way. An unbeatable combination. As far as I'm concerned, you don't really need to hurry back in seven years. If you would like to stay away longer, I won't be pestering you to return. We'll survive..
Mortal Man Posted July 1, 2010 Posted July 1, 2010 Hi Demosthenes,Don't pay any attention to Dani-EL. He's just jealous that Professor Meldrum is more photogenic than he is.MM
Daniel Peterson Posted July 1, 2010 Posted July 1, 2010 Don't pay any attention to Dani-EL. He's just jealous that Professor Meldrum is more photogenic than he is.Not at all. I'm much cuter than Professor [?!?!?!] Meldrum.

You can't just assert things like that around here. Do you know how many threads there have been here about this guy? He seems to be pretty universally seen as a showman pedaling bad data to a gullible LDS public. You could at least stand up for your position if it has any validity.

My linkDemosthenes I don't know where your contention that Rod Meldrum is a geneticist from or that he is involved in DNA research. Here is his bio from his own website:About Rod Meldrum Rod Meldrum served as senior scientific researcher for 7 years on a natural sciences book to be published in the near future. He was President and CEO of High Country Gourmet, Inc. in Orem, Utah. More recently he was Director of Business Development for Interact Medical, an online network LMS (Learning Management System) based training systems developer for surgeons and patients in the medical device industry. He and his wife, Tonya, are the parents of four teenage children. Brother Meldrum is a third generation member of the church, served a mission in Milan, Italy and has served faithfully in many church leadership callings, most recently Young Men
mapman Posted July 1, 2010 Posted July 1, 2010 The only way to accept Brother Meldrum's model, is to ignore the text of the Book of Mormon. The geography just doesn't fit.
