"...Moses appeared before us, and committed unto us the keys of the gathering of Israel from the four parts of the earth, and the leading of the ten tribes from the land of the north." I understand that to mean two distinctly different events. I do not believe the gathering of Israel from the four parts of the earth ( which is what missionary work is all about currently ) to be the same as the leading of the ten tribes from the land of the north. The idea that the leading of the lost tribes from the land of the north was understood by a number of early church leaders to be a completely separate event than the gathering occurring from missionary work. I only add these few examples because I find them interesting, whether one takes them to be prophetically based or formed from opinion. If indeed determined to be prophetic I would say the concept of the returning of the lost 10 tribes is misunderstood among the majority of LDS members.

In 1916 October General Conference Elder Talmage speaks a great deal regarding the lost 10 tribes. He explains that "There is tendency among men to explain away what they don't wish to understand in literal simplicity..." then goes on to explain that some will say the gathering is in process and has been from the early days of the church therefore the lost 10 tribes are now being gathered and we should not expect or look for a body of people unknown to our whereabouts. He continues that the gathering is in process and that the prophecy still stands that a people shall be brought forth from their hiding place and their scripture will become one with the canonized works and modern revelation.

Elder Talmage later predicts in the same discourse "The tribes shall come and they are not lost unto the lord; they shall be brought forth as has been predicted; and I say unto you there are those now living - aye, some here present - who shall live to read the records of the Lost tribes of Israel, which shall be made one with the record of the Jews, or the Holy Bible, the record of the Nephites, or the Book of Mormon, even as the Lord hath predicted."

Orson Pratt also taught that the lost tribes will return to Zion for a time in order to receive the fullness of the Priesthood under the hands of Ephraim and will there remain until they receive their inheritance with Judah and not Ephraim.

I am of the opinion that the 10 lost tribes are just that. They are a seperate body that we currently cannot come in contact with. Where ever they are and however their return occurs it is not something that will be overlooked or inconsequential. It will be considered greater than the deliverance of the Israelites by Moses. It is also interesting that 3 Nephi 15:15 mentions the Lost Tribes as being in a similar circumstance as Lehi's descendants.
