At least I see two posters that have come to the same or close to the same conclusions that I have. This is not over and what scares me is that so many forget the lessons so quickly. That is why I think we are in the General Mormon times of the BoM.

Lehi:

"Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean their not out to get you." :P I actually heard that statement from a paranoid schizophrenic patient of mine.

Yes Russia has a long and inglorious history of war. But given the relatively short history of the US I wouldn't be too fast to place all credit to the Russia for that one. Vlad the Impaler seems to want to bring back the bad old days of Imperial Russia. Uggh ;)

I've seen the inherent problems with any "ism", for a longtime now and have no desire to live under the thumb of any of them. I really am a moderate

Not yet! I wish we did have a General Mormon in our day. Someone who would stand up at the bully-pulpit and scream some sanity into the ears of the people. Someone much more pursuasive than we have now.

I am speaking of the last General Mormon. The one who tried to teach correct principals. The one who finally left them to their own devices and who only came back because his people begged him to but couldn't save them. They continued in their own destruction. Thats where I think we are. Continuing our downward spiral into destruction as a people of consequence. We are trading our heritage for a mess of pottage.

So Lehi I am just as paranoid as you and I may even be more fatalistic than you.

Having recently read Revelation, I am about as fatalistic as anyone can be. I have hope for my family and for the church (as many as stay faithful, anyway) because God is in charge. Live or die, we are in His hands.

Nonetheless, it is irritating to see so many people ignore the facts, gloss over history, and disregard the danger. It is frustrating as the blue blazes to see people sell their own freedoms, and fritter mine away without my consent. They will deserve their fate, I fear, but I will receive the same. The difference is, they may end up liking it, and I know I will not. Many slaves prefer their lot in life because it requires so little of them: no responsibility, no decisions, no choices.

I believe Elder Benson held the same thoughts and feelings. I know he hated socialism for its evils: mostly for its destruction of freedom.

I have come to the point that I feel there is nothing I can do except be an observer and say I told you so.

And, if you read the David O. McKay biography of a few years ago, yes, some were concerned and the call to head the European mission was intended to remove the inflammatory rhetoric.

Give credit where credit is due, that was Gordon Hinckley. Benson was low functioning during most of reign.

John, there was a marked change in his ministry right before his call as Prophet and thereafter. Yes, President Hinckley helped, be he did not cause the change in his ministry, The Holy Spirit did that.

I keep a copy of the pamphlet "The New World Order An Analysis for Latter-day Saints" from the teachings of Ezra Taft Benson on my desk. On my bookshelf a copy o "An Enemy hath done this". I agree with most of his politics. In fact I don't know of another one of the brethren that have more closely matched my own political ideology than his.

But some of the inflammatory/bizarre statements mentioned in my OP are rubbish.

President Benson did warn us that we were under condemnation for not studying the Book of Mormon. I believe he didn't just mean to read it again but to study it and get the message and warnings put there for us.

And just think, President Benson studied the BoM without the help of Millet, McConkie, and Brent Top. AMAZING! I won't say anything about Gardner lest LOAP take out a bounty on my head.

IMO, the scriptures are the best commentary on the scriptures. The rest is just icing.

In my opinion, the marked change came from his declining mental function.

HGM, LGM, other geographic questions, archeological proofs, etc. are great to discuss and to through at anti-mormons who can't see through the fog but in reality it is the message and our own personal revelation of truthfulness of the messages and warnings it contains that is important.

Careful. That sounds like it may be a board violation.

We are not allowed to acknowledge well known historical events on this board? Under what reason?

By the way, his declining metal facility was due to **shock** his advanced age.

Gasp! How dare you say that about the Lord's anointed! Prophets don't decline in advanced age until they are well over 200 years old. Read the Old Testament, you Apostate! :-P

I think the marked difference was not a display of diminished capacity. Rather, it was an enhanced capacity to recognize it was time to leave the politics behind and share the message of the Gospel. Which is in part: John Larsen is a son of God whether he likes it or not and is entitled to apply the atoning blood of Jesus Christ to his life at any point. Just mention Sione referred you; I get a discount card to Deseret Book.

About the Civil Rights movement and communism....

There was a book written around 2000 by a former KGB guy named Vasily Mitrokhin that asserts

1. The KGB took steps to make the Civil Rights movement more violent with the hopes that it would lead to civil unrest. This included infiltration into civil rights movement leadership.

-- J. Edgar Hoover also believed that the civil rights movement was infiltrated by communists trying to sow civil unrest during the cold war.

2. Both the KGB and the FBI sought to disgrace MLK jr. - The communists because they felt he was too moderate and wanted a more radical leader in charge of the US civil rights movement. Contrary to support from the communists, MLK jr. wasn't violent enough for them.

3. The KGB had extensive involvement in creating public discord about Vietnam in US media. Again, the USSR benefited because it made the US look weak.

This is not my personal conspiracy theory....I'm not that paranoid or that smart.

This info is from Mr. Mitrokhin. I don't know if he is legit....but it certainly seems to back up Benson's claim that communists were involved in the Civil rights movement.

And discredits that MLK was directly funded by communists (at least the USSR).

David O McKay and the Rise of Modern Mormonism was one of the best reads I've had in years. What an awesome book.

Think about what was teached in the Book of Mormon when it came to the wars though.

They didn't tell the people to make swords, or armor. But the people were instructed to learn the ways of God. Learn the gospel. Repent. Make sure that you were doing what the prophet instructed. Once you are right with God, and he is on your side, THEN you can build swords.

Spiritual preparation first. You can build guns after!

This is when we should be teaching our kids the gospel. Making sure that you are worthy of Gods protection.

The war chapters had a LOT of good information. Captain Moroni grabbed his people and had to go to war. While they were (to poke at another thread) Doing EVERYTHING THEY COULD DO, they also went to the prophet (Alma IIRC) to find out what God wanted them to do.

Alma's direction included arming the people with the sword of the spirit.

I dunno about everyone else, but that is part of the plan for MY family.

Any idea where I can get these books electronically? I do a lot of reading on my iphone and PDF formats are usually the best. :P

Here's the gist of it. DOM loved his wife more than any other man (including Father Adam) ever has. And he was probably the nicest guy in the world. Thus rendering him the greatest Prophet of the 20th century.

Oh yeah, he demoted J. Reuben Clark :P
