Olavarria Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 Fundamentalists like to use the whole "Adam-God" thing to show that the good ship Zion is off course. Anti's like to use it to show how wacky we are. But did BY really teach what is ascribed to him? All emphasis are mine?1)"The world may in vain ask the question, "Who are we?" But the Gospel tells us that WE ARE THE SONS AND DAUGHTERS OF THAT GOD WHOM WE SERVE. Some say, "we are the children of Adam and Eve." So we are, AND THEY ARE THE CHILDREN OF OUR HEAVENLY FATHER. We are all the children of Adam and Eve, and THEY AND WE ARE THE OFFSPRING OF HIM WHO DWELLS IN THE HEAVENS, the highest Intelligence that dwells anywhere that we have any knowledge of."-BY [JD 13:311-312, April 17, 1870] 2)"Every world has had AN ADAM and AN EVE, named so simply because the first man is always called Adam and the first woman Eve." [brigham Young "For this is Life Eternal," Oct 8, 1854 p 7]3)"This brings to my mind the vision that Joseph Smith had, when he saw ADAM open the gate of the Celestial City and admit the people one by one. He then saw FATHER ADAM conduct them to the throne one by one, when they were crowned Kings and Priests of God. I merely bring this up to impress upon your mind the principles of order, but it will nevertheless apply to every member of the Church." [JD 9:41, Heber C. Kimball, March 17, 1861]4)"There is hardly ever a commandment given to any person or persons before whom a temptation is not placed to decoy them, if possible, from an obedience to that commandment. Our parents in the garden of Eden had had but little experience in this world; and it seemed that they must have a trial corresponding with the experience and knowledge they had of things as they were. THE INSTRUCTION OF FATHER ADAM was, "of all the trees in the garden thou mayest eat, excepting one; and in the day thou eatest of that, thou shalt surely die." THE LORD SAID, Adam and Eve, you may enjoy yourselves; but there is one tree I command you that ye shall not eat of; for in the day that ye do, ye shall surely die." [JD 5:16, Orson Hyde, June 14, 1857]5)"How has it transpired that theological truth is thus so widely disseminated? It is because GOD was once known on the earth among his children of mankind, as we know one another. ADAM was as conversant with his FATHER who placed him upon this earth as we are conversant with our earthly parents. "THE FATHER frequently came to visit HIS SON ADAM, and talked and walked with him; and the children of Adam were more or less acquainted with their Grandfather, and their children were more or less acquainted with their Great-Grandfather; and the things that pertain to God and to heaven were as familiar among mankind, in the first ages of their existence on the earth, as these mountains are to our mountain boys, as our gardens are to our wives and children, or as the road to the Western Ocean is to the experienced traveller. "-BY[JD 9:149]6)"I want to tell you, each and every one of you, that you are well acquainted WITH GOD OUR HEAVENLY FATHER, OR THE GREAT ELOHIEM. You are well acquainted with Him, for these is not a soul of you but what has lived in His house and dwelt with Him year after year; and yet you are seeking to become acquainted with Him, when the fact is, you have merely forgotten what you did know... There is not a person here today but what is a son or a daughter of that Being. In the spirit world their spirits were first begotten and brought forth, and they lived there with their parents for ages before they came here. This, perhaps is hard for many to believe, but it is the greatest nonsense in the world not to believe it. If you do not believe it, cease to call Him Father; and when you pray, pray to some other character."-BY (JD 9:216) 7)"When our father Adam came into the garden of Eden, he came into it with a celestial body, and brought Eve, one of his wives, with him. He helped to make and organize this world. He is MICHAEL, the Archangel, the ANCIENT OF DAYS!" -BY(JD 1:46) "It is true that the earth was organized by three distinct characters, namely, ELOHIEM, YAHOVAH, and MICHAEL, these three forming a quorum...".-BY(JD1:46).Summation of quotes:1) God dwells in the heavens. God is our father. God is Adam and Eve's father.2) Adam and Eve are not just personal names, but titles. The first man of any world is an Adam. The first woman of any world is an Eve.3)There is a greeter named Adam and a coronator name Father Adam.4)The Lord is called Father Adam and he instructs the recievers of his instruction who are called Adam and Eve.5)God is the father of Adam6)Our Heavenly Father is called Elohiem. 7) Adam helped form the earth. He is Michael.8)The earth was created by three figures: Elohiem, Jehovah and Michael. What I am saying is that BY tought alot of "complicated" stuff. It should be noted that Adam and Eve are name titles and not merely personal names(Moses 1:34). So we have to be careful when quoting random quotes out of context. Brigham Young was a prophet of God and knew what he was talking about. When we remember that "Adam" is simply a title which refers to the "first man" or "first father"(Abr 1:3), applying it to Heavenly Father is not at all out of place. For He is the father of all our sprirts and the first Man of all men. However, He is not the father of our bodies or the first man of this earth. The idea that Adam-Michael, who Joseph Smith describes as being subordinate to Christ*, is God Our Father, the father of our spirirts and bodies is false and is largely paraded around by 2 groups of people: fundamentalists and anti-mormons. The anti-mormons do so in order to make us look idolatrous. The fundamentalists do so in order to show that the Church is "out of order" and has fallen from the truth. This idea is the folklore to which I refer. So in summary, what I am saying is:1) BY tought many things about Adam which he did not seek to fully explain or reconcile with the scriptures. None of these teaching were ever written down by him and laid before the general membership of the Church, or even the General Authorties for a sustaining vote. 2)Many members of the church interpreted these ideas in various ways and rejected these ideas.3)BY continued to teach these things in private, with no attempt to fully explain himself to the general membership of the Church.4) A collection of BY quotes from the 1850's-70's is used to back up at least 3 Adam-God theories. 5) The most populer view, that "Adam(the missing rib guy) is God the Father" is advocated by "fundamentalists" and anti-mormons. 6)This view has been repudiated OR contradicted by various LDS leaders, most notably: Joseph Smith Jr., Brigham Young, Joseph F. Smith, Heber J. Grant, Joseph Fielding Smith, Bruce R. McConkie and Spencer W. Kimball. 7) BY like many other men has been the victim of gross misunderstandings, remember the Roman charge of Christian cannablism based on a misinterpretation of Communion. No hard and fast interpretations of BY's Adam-God views can be made given the loosness with which this name title can be applied. *http://www.lds.org/ldsorg/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=da135f74db46c010VgnVCM1000004d82620aRCRD&locale=0&sourceId=da4720596a845110VgnVCM100000176f620a____&hideNav=1&contentLocale=0
Olavarria Posted December 8, 2008 Author Posted December 8, 2008 "Whether Adam is the personage that we should consider Our Heavenly Father, or not, is considerable of a mystery to a good many. I do not care for one moment how that is; it is no matter whether we are to consider Him our God, or whether His Father, or his Grandfather, for in either case we are of one species of one family and Jesus Christ is also of our species."Brigham Young;JD 4:217.
jkfrost Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 It is funny how when one reads the JOD on this subject, that is the words of BY himself they find out thathe knew who God the Father was and who Adam ( Michael ) and Eve were.and who Jesus the Christ is.and how they relate to each other and usall are the same species as the Father.and how we teach the same today.
cjcampbell Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 It is funny how when one reads the JOD on this subject, that is the words of BY himself they find out thathe knew who God the Father was and who Adam ( Michael ) and Eve were.and who Jesus the Christ is.and how they relate to each other and usall are the same species as the Father.and how we teach the same today.Indeed. The relationship between God the Father, Jehovah, and Adam has always been clear. It is ridiculous to try to paint Brigham Young as teaching something that contradicts even our temple ceremonies. But the people who continue to teach that Brigham Young taught the Adam-God theory are not interested in truth. They know they are being dishonest -- yet another case of lying for Jesus. You have to wonder how these ministers are going to explain their dishonesty when they stand before the judgment bar of God.
Olavarria Posted December 8, 2008 Author Posted December 8, 2008 My personal view is that no single "adam-god theory" accounts for all the quotes attributed to BY, Heber C Kimball or Eliza R. Snow.
baddonkey Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 You're right Herr Amun, if Brigham Young wrote the temple ceremony which he did, that proves he didn't believe that Adam is God because it shows that they are two separate people. Stupid fundies and antis.
BCSpace Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 BY tought many things about Adam which he did not seek to fully explain or reconcile with the scriptures. If we assume the BY is familiar with LDS doctrine and scripture extant at the time abd believes such doctrine (a reasonable assumption), then the notion that he taught an Adam - God theory, that the Adam who fell is God the Father, is unreasonable because it doesn't square with these doctrines....Adam was not a resurrected beingAdam died (resurrected beings don't die again)Adam is not GodAdam is subordinate to Jesus ChristAdam and Eve were unmarried when they came into the Garden of EdenAdam is a son of Godetc.None of these teaching were ever written down by him and laid before the general membership of the Church, or even the General Authorties for a sustaining vote. Not a standard for doctrine anyway. However, one of the most quoted references in the JoD (Journal of Discourses 1:50-51) was reported differently by Wilford Woodruff and differently again by Ben E. Rich. These differences throw some more wrenches in the Adam God theory.Bottom line: 1. BY never taught Adam-God.2. Our critics will never let go of it even when they know they are wrong, as long as they can get mileage.

Bob Crockett Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 I recall seeing some research done by Elden Watson which demonstrated that material was dropped from the JD 1:46-50 sermon; the steno notes had additional paragraphs. I don't put a lot of stock in what was said in that particular sermon because it seems garbled to me, although Kraut certainly has pointed to similar sermons.
consiglieri Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 What Elden Watson has said seems garbled to me.
Bob Crockett Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 True, but I think the entire subject is garbled. Hugh Nibley reputedly said that he agreed with the doctrine but wouldn't discuss it. Of course, then, there's Bruce R. McConkie's writings and letter on the subject quite to the contrary; as if perhaps he didn't ever wade into it. My own personal view is that Brigham and Orson were so polarized on this and other doctrines (see Conflict in the Q) because of their unhappiness with each other that their statements became too polarized.

Over the next two weeks, I'm not going to have much time to respond due to finals, but I'll give my thoughts without dealing with the subject matter.1. The Journal of Discourses and the Millenial Star were the equivalent of the Conference Report in the Ensign today. What would you say to the Saints in the 1850s about what they should believe?2. Agreed. But that doesn't make Brigham Young wrong or them right, or vice versa. Such behavior has always occurred.3. The whole point of the famous "Adam-God" sermon was to correct the elders of the Church in regards to doctrine. On the face of it, I'd say it's the biggest failed talk of a Church president ever.4. I'm aware of them in the general nuances: 1. The "fundamentalist" theory you like putting in quotes. 2. The 2nd Book of Commandments theory/revelation that Michael is not resurrected and is the Holy Ghost. 3. The Multiple Mortal Probation theory. Are you aware of some others? I'd be interested in discussing them in a few weeks.5. Nice smear tactic. Associate those with a testimony of the Book of Mormon and Joseph Smith's role as a prophet with anti-Mormons such as the Tanners who get their ill-gotten gain by living a life in service to the adversary, lies, and false doctrine.6. Joseph Smith Jr. : Are you aware of all the quotes Joseph Smith made about Adam, the Church of the Firstborn, the role of the Firstborn, the Ancient of Days, and visions he experienced with others? Plus, I point you to the 9th Article of Faith: http://www.lds.org/library/display/0,4945,106-1-2-1,00.html Brigham Young: expand Joseph F. Smith: a backer of Talmadge Heber J. Grant: a guy who didn't know the Church was true Joseph Fielding Smith: a believer in Orson Prattism Bruce R. McConkie: you officially got my goat. Here's some quotes from Elder McConkie. Ask yourself if they're Christlike? The devil keeps this heresy alive as a means of obtaining converts to cultism. It is contrary to the whole plan of salvation set forth in the scriptures. Anyone who has read the Book of Moses, and anyone who has received the temple endowment, and who yet believes the "Adam-God Theory" does not deserve to saved. (Laughter) Those ensnared by it reject the living prophet and close their ears to the apostles of their day. "We will follow those who went before," they say. And having so determined, they soon are ready to enter polygamous relationships that destroy their souls. Spencer W. Kimball: And if I believe that Orson Prattism is wrong, and the truth as revealed to Brigham Young is right, what's there to disagree with besides the fact that he was wrong.7. Agreed. Like all the fog-machine wielding apologists try to use to cover it up. (I can't remember who first used that phrase, Cinepro maybe? I loved it.)8. It is a name title as well. Agreed. Now, here's what Joseph Smith had to say in one of his very last sermons: When things that are of the greatest importance are passedover by the weak-minded men without even a thought, Iwant to see truth in all its bearings and hug it to mybosom. I believe all that God ever revealed, and I neverhear of a man being damned for believing too much; butthey are damned for unbelief.Sermon in the Grove Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, pp. 369-376I love the Restored Gospel. I love Heavenly Father and Mother, and I love our Elder Brother the Savior Jesus Christ, the only name by which we can be saved. I love Joseph Smith, I know he was a prophet of God. So please don't lump with nefarious anti-mormons.

You have to wonder how these ministers are going to explain their dishonesty when they stand before the judgment bar of God.One complaint- What if the Jehovah you're thinking of isn't the Jehovah who is/will be Jesus Christ? And no, I'm not a protestant minister. Yes, it's a lie to say that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints believes the Adam-God theory. But what else do you expect from those hirelings of Satan? You're right Herr Amun, if Brigham Young wrote the temple ceremony which he did, that proves he didn't believe that Adam is God because it shows that they are two separate people. Stupid fundies and antis. Ever heard of the Lecture at the Veil? Brigham Young wrote that too, and it was in the St. George endowment. Google it, no links. erichard Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 ...2)"Every world has had AN ADAM and AN EVE, named so simply because the first man is always called Adam and the first woman Eve." [brigham Young "For this is Life Eternal," Oct 8, 1854 p 7]Hi Herr Amun,I liked your list, as it does not say anything that contradicts my 2BC faith. The above Oct 8, 1854 discourse you quoted is the best A/G discourse I know of. Here is a link to all of it: Here is some more of that talk:â?¦ Moses said Adam was made of the dust of the ground, but he did not say of what ground. I say he was not made of the dust of the ground of this earth, but he was made of the dust of the earth were he lived, where he honored his calling, BELIEVING IN HIS SAVIOR, or Elder Brother, and by his faithfulness, was redeemed, and got a glorious RESURRECTION.â?¦ I tell you more, Adam is the FATHER OF OUR SPIRITS. He lived upon an earth; he did abide his creation, and did honor his calling and priesthood, and obeyed his master or Lord, and probably many of his wives did the same, and they lived, and died upon an earth, and then were resurrected again to immortality and eternal life.â?¦I tell you, when you see your Father in the heavens, you will see Adam; when you see your Mother that bears your spirit, you will see mother Eve. And when you see yourselves there, you have gained your exaltation; you have honored your calling here on the earth; your body has returned to its mother earth; and somebody has broken the chains of death that bound you, and given you a resurrection.â?¦ When you meet your Father in Heaven, you will know him, and realize that you have lived with him, and rested in his bosom for ages gone passed, and he will hail you as his sons and daughters, and embrace you, and you will embrace him, and, "Hallelujah, thank God, I have come to Father again, I have got back home," will resound through the heavens.(Emphisis mine, of course)Can both the quotes you gave, and the ones above I give both be true? I think so.Richard
erichard Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 ... The 2nd Book of Commandments theory/revelation that Michael is not resurrected and is the Holy Ghost. ...Hi,You are Notquiterightyet. The 2BC clearly teaches that Michael was resurrected, and that when He became the Holy Ghost his body did not decay, but was laid in a hidden place. When Adam returns to Adam-Ondi-Ahman he will regain his resurrected body, and the Holy Ghost will be taken from the earth.Alma 11 teaches "concerning the resurrection of the mortal body" that "their spirits uniting with their bodies, never to be divided". The 2BC seems to contract this. I am not convinced it does, however.Richard

consiglieri Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 Moses 5:9 contradicts the idea that Adam/Michael was/is the Holy Ghost.Interestingly, the same verse supports the idea that in the days of Adam, the Only Begotten Son was the Holy Ghost.

consiglieri Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 So out of curiousity, do you think BY intended to teach that we should worship Adam or Eloheim?Good morning to you, LDSMusic! To my knowledge, which is far from encyclopedic, Brigham Young never taught anything regarding to whom our worship is appropriately directed in this context, so anything I say would be purely speculative. However, if I were to speculate, I think Brigham Young would be fine with Latter-day Saints worshipping God the Father of our spirits (Adam), or any God above Adam, up to and including Elohim. It helps to remember that it was Joseph Smith who controverted all of Christendom by assigning to Adam a high and holy calling over this world. All the Best!--Consiglieri
