Joseph Antley Posted July 27, 2007 Posted July 27, 2007 I doubt Rowling meant for Harry to be percieved as a typification of Christ. If I had to guess, I would say she isn't very religious. But at least Harry celebrates Christmas.*sigh* I'm still in denial that the series is over...
torquate Posted July 27, 2007 Posted July 27, 2007 Anything that inspires rotten egg flavored jelly beans is obviously Satanic.Amen. One of the deacons gave me one of those a few days ago and I have still not found it within my heart to forgive him.
emeliza Posted July 27, 2007 Posted July 27, 2007 This thread reminds me of Dana Carvey on Saturday Night Live as the Church Lady...."Could it be SATAN?"
USU78 Posted July 27, 2007 Posted July 27, 2007 WARNING!! SPOILER!!Well, at least it is easier to say "lawyer."And I don't have to wear fishnets, either. Unless I want. It's just a jump to the leftAnd then a step to the rightWith your hands on your hipsYou bring your knees in tightBut it's the pelvic thrust that really drives you insane,Let's do the Time Warp again! To aquire selfless love, one must be willing to sacrifice one's self for another or others. Is it not the sacrifice of Charlotte for the benefit of her children-to-be, as well as her working so hard to save Zuckerman's Famous Pig from becoming Christmas night cold cuts, that makes White's book so very meaningful for its fan? Is it not the sacrifice of the male spider or praying mantis so that the young will be nourished that makes some see in that sacrifice an echo of the Master's? Is it not the sacrifice a loving Father in Heaven makes in granting us freedom and space in which to learn to emulate His supernal qualities?Harry's mother gives her life for him, and that fullest expression of love protects him from and destroys (though not permanently) evil. Harry himself, by sacrificing himself, destroys evil as well, but evil, even evil personified, is given a chance at repentence but, in rejecting that chance to "be a man," destroys itself.Harry may not, ultimately, be a Chr_st figure, as Card points out, but he is in every way that matters, a Christian.
Paul Ray Posted July 27, 2007 Posted July 27, 2007 I doubt Rowling meant for Harry to be percieved as a typification of Christ. If I had to guess, I would say she isn't very religious. But at least Harry celebrates Christmas.I think any good person typifies Christ to the extent that they typify a good character. No person is as good as Christ is, of course... unless that person is also as good as God.But all the good guys are the same "type" of good as Jesus Christ.... and all the bad guys are the same "type" of bad as Satan.*sigh* I'm still in denial that the series is over...Me too (in a sense)... and I only keep up with the movies.
Bond...James Bond Posted July 27, 2007 Posted July 27, 2007 *sigh* I'm still in denial that the series is over...There's still the Encyclopedia Harrius Potterus to look forward too.....
Jigglysaint Posted July 27, 2007 Posted July 27, 2007 Anything that inspires rotten egg flavored jelly beans is obviously Satanic. You too, eh? Man that stuff is nasty!
auteur55 Posted July 27, 2007 Posted July 27, 2007 My sister in laws EV church she attends condemns Harry Potter on a regular basis as promoting witchcraft and sorcery and you should keep your kids from reading it.Yet they have never said boo about drinking, smoking, pre-marital sex or living together outside of marriage. I always found this odd.

I always found this odd.Calling Harry Potter (books) Satanic is one of the "in" things to do.Those other things you mentioned have become a little more popular.
LifeOnaPlate Posted July 27, 2007 Posted July 27, 2007 The battle cry of the paradigm pirate.Agreed, Tarsk.
Bond...James Bond Posted July 27, 2007 Posted July 27, 2007 Well, at least it is easier to say "lawyer."And I don't have to wear fishnets, either.I dream that someday we'll be able to tell lawyers from the rest of humanity by a law forcing them to wear fishnets at all times.....*sigh*
Bond...James Bond Posted July 27, 2007 Posted July 27, 2007 growl...........I hate double....no make that TRIPLE posts!!!!
Obiwan Posted July 27, 2007 Posted July 27, 2007 There's of Satan and then there's of Men. Harry Potter clearly of the latter.
consiglieri Posted July 27, 2007 Author Posted July 27, 2007 You too, eh? Man that stuff is nasty!Make mine vomit.I dream that someday we'll be able to tell lawyers from the rest of humanity by a law forcing them to wear fishnets at all times.....*sigh*No looking up my trouser leg, Bond!

urroner Posted July 27, 2007 Posted July 27, 2007 I dream that someday we'll be able to tell lawyers from the rest of humanity by a law forcing them to wear fishnets at all times.....*sigh*I dream that someday we'll be able to tell lawyers from the rest of humanity by a law forcing them to wear fishnets at all times.....*sigh*Well said Bond, anything worth saying once is worth saying twice.
Tarski Posted July 27, 2007 Posted July 27, 2007 Agreed, Tarsk.Huh?That was Tsuzuki, not Tarski.Go back and look.
Son Posted July 27, 2007 Posted July 27, 2007 Yes, the Bible, in parts, is indeed childish fantasy. What was your point?Your heart must be as a little child in order to inherit the kingdom of heaven.
Bond...James Bond Posted July 27, 2007 Posted July 27, 2007 double post.....apparently from long ago.
Bond...James Bond Posted July 27, 2007 Posted July 27, 2007 Well said Bond, anything worth saying once is worth saying twice. Yep....and for my next trick I'll yank out my Seer Stone and explain why my computer keeps double posting crap.
Son Posted July 27, 2007 Posted July 27, 2007 I do alot of things that aren't "of God" then....washing my hands...brushing my teeth...paying bills....driving.....Intention my friendIf you are washing your hands to remove blood, after murdering your brother. Then that would not glorify God. If you are washing your hands to keep healthy and presentable to others, then it does. Brushing teeth has been covered quite well from another poster.Paying bills, shows honor, integrity, and a desire to live up to commitments. Which are all noble and Godly attributes. Thus Glorifies God.Driving like an idiot, would not.Driving safely and respectfully, does. It shows kindness, and caring for others that share the road with you. Thus showing Godly attributes and attitudes. To elaborate on Glorifying God. It is not what goes into the mind that pollutes it, as much as what comes out of it. If you can't look at a beautiful creation without lust. Then you are defiled. Not because of the creation, but because of your attitude towards it. Discipline is glorifying God.Reading Harry Potter in order to past the time or get some message that brings about thoughts of growth. Glorifies God.Reading it to increase a desire to be a witch or sorceror, and wanting to be like that. Does not.son
Tsuzuki Posted July 27, 2007 Posted July 27, 2007 Huh?That was Tsuzuki, not Tarski.Go back and look.I am you.
Tsuzuki Posted July 27, 2007 Posted July 27, 2007 Reading it to increase a desire to be a witch or sorceror, and wanting to be like that. Does not.I don't know about anybody else, but my witchcraft and sorcery is all for the glory of God, and I didn't need Harry Potter's help.
Son Posted July 27, 2007 Posted July 27, 2007 I don't know about anybody else, but my witchcraft and sorcery is all for the glory of God, and I didn't need Harry Potter's help.If you practice witchcraft and sorcery, how does that glorify God. How do you practice it? What actions are involved in your witchcraft and sorcery?
