To be fair they used to announce temples at press conferences outside of general conference, as far as I know announcing temples at conference is a late 1990's thing and it's gone on ever since

Maybe because so many were done each year they thought it better to announce them all at once so the press would still pay attention. 😛

As part of the announcement, Elder Haynie shared that “in a recent meeting of the First Presidency of the Church, a decision was made that, when directed by the First Presidency, the announcement of the construction of a new temple should be made on location by a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles or a member of an Area Presidency.” He added that, “such an announcement by a member of an Area Presidency has never occurred before. Tonight, will be the first.”

It would be nice if they start giving more visibility to the Area Presidency, more need for the locals to pay attention.

I say that having no idea who my Area Presidency is.

added:  Now if only I can retain these names and faces unlike most other names and faces I learn these days.

What an excellent way to stoke the fervor of the local populace at stake conference or Christmas devotional or special events.

You mean by announcing temples there?

It will contribute, imo, to building a greater sense of community as it will be a memorable experience shared by many in the community and talked about when gathering together.
