I’ve seen in many cases—including my own, by the way—that it’s often a combination of factors that leads people to leave the church.
One might also ask, “Why do people stay in the Church?”
Very few members are enthusiastic about the new findings in church history. But they can still somehow talk themselves into it, because church culture has become such an integral part of their lives, or because family and close friends are devout members whom they don’t want to disappoint. These are important factors that keep people in the Church.
If, for example, a divorce occurs and the children no longer attend church, a reevaluation takes place, during which one also views church history more critically.
In the end, the reasons for staying in the church may be too weak.
