Seventy-three Baptized in Nigeria Makurdi District

As someone who baptized [or, better said, for the most part, saw baptized] less than a third of that number on my entire two-year mission, and as much as I get why some people might cast a jaundiced eye upon the prospect of baptizing 73 people at once [or within a short time] I have a hard time believing that the powers-that-be in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the area aren't working proactively to see to it that the ratio of baptisms to genuine conversions isn't as close to 1:1 as possible.

And with the rising tides of secularization, atheism*, and hopelessness in so much of the world (in fact, it must be said, in most of the world), it does seem that Africa is "bucking those trends" and may well be "where it's at" (my phrases, both, in quotation marks) in terms of keeping the torch of faith lit when, otherwise, unfortunately, it might well flicker and die worldwide.  Certainly, there have been more than a few amazing books written on the history of Christianity and  of the faith of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Africa.

*If one is an atheist, yet one believes in doing good unto others and for others, in doing unto others as one would have done unto him or her, in loving ones neighbor as oneself, in reaching out to others and striving to alleviate suffering wherever possible, and in making life as good as one can make it for oneself and for those around one before (from his or her perspective) "succumbing to the void," more power to that person.

As the Lord told Joseph Smith, "Inasmuch as men [and women] do good, they shall in nowise lose their reward" (Doctrine and Covenants 58:28).  And there is no religious limitation on that score: It includes sincere men and women of whatever religious persuasion, or even of no particular religious persuasion whatsoever.
