It doesn't matter if you are left, right, Mormon, non-Mormon, whatever. Spokespeople spin news in favor of who they represent, and it comes across as "nothing to see here, folks" / Baghdad Bob-ish. I don't care whom you favor and whom you dislike --- that's how spokespeople come across. I would rather hear more directly from the Brethren themselves, rather than through layers of bureaucrats and PR people. I know that the size of the church and its corporate operations make this difficult, but I think this alone would help with a lot of issues of perception people have. The company my husband works for has customers who buy the stuff my husband helps design. One of these customers wanted to talk with my husband about the design, but people in the company kept telling him "we will talk with the customer. We need you working on this and the customer will want us to make changes that won't allow us to make deadlines." He finally told his bosses "look. The customer wants to talk with me. I'm the one who understands the design. I'm spending more time telling him to talk with you then I would talking with him. If he wants to make changes I can tell him that will increase the cost." The company let him talk with the guy and all went well and my husband can work on the things he was hired to do. I do see a need for spokesmen in the church, but I agree that sometimes it is just easier and better if the GA can speak. 1
Kenngo1969 Posted March 4, 2017 Posted March 4, 2017 (edited) Rongo: Do some (perhaps many) public relations people spin? Do they see it as part of the job? Yes. (I don't concede that's what's going on here: your mileage may vary, but I'm willing to give those involved the benefit of an enormous doubt.) But the professionals in the field whom I know understand that any design to obfuscate, whatever its seeming benefits in the short run, are not worth the cost of credibility to them and to the entities they represent in the long run. As far as hearing directly from the Brethren themselves, as opposed to hearing from Public Affairs, is concerned, one of the reasons why such people and departments exist is to give the organization a unified, consistent voice. As hard as that may seem to be for a Church that does have a Public Affairs apparatus, it would be even harder for one without such an apparatus. Edited March 4, 2017 by Kenngo1969 1
