The Nehor Posted June 14, 2016 Posted June 14, 2016 13 hours ago, Robert F. Smith said: The USA has comparatively few mass shootings, and nearly all of those which do occur are in places where guns are not supposed to be allowed (schools, theaters, and other "gun-free zones"). Other countries have mass shootings, and that includes many countries with long running civil wars. The per capita death rates make America look pretty tame. Nearly all shootings in the USA occur in the inner city where poverty, drugs, disease, and gangs predominate. Most areas remain untouched by such violence. Foreign political and religious ideologies play a big part in these mass shootings, along with mental illness of some perpetrators. There will be no meaningful dialogue on this issue, just as there has not been in the past. Professional opinion is ignored, while yokels think that a gun ban is the answer. We can reduce the number of instances of shootings by applying a totalitarian regime on America, which would mean the end of our open society. The cure would be worse than the disease. What is with the insinuation that if we had fewer gun-free zones that marksmen civilians would take out shooters quickly and decisively? It almost never happens but it is seen as some wondrous thing we will see more of if we just had more guns. Other countries do have mass shootings but most of them are more military or the result of organized crime. The number in the United States has increased dramatically. The per capita death rates are low but we also are not overrun by organized crime or cartels or political extremists. We do have gang problems of course but that is a social issue that also needs to be addressed. There are some of these but the phenomenon of the lone crazed shooter with no real coherent agenda is a growing phenomenon here. Actually historically the yokels are the ones most protective of their right to firearms capable of killing lots of people. I would like to see gun control tightened a little while the general right to carry sidearms and hunting rifles and the like protected. We really need to tackle the psychological impetus behind it. The people doing it are generally weak-willed idiots following the scripts of those before. My first solution would be to humiliate these shooters. Seriously, no privacy for their lives before the shooting. Media should make them out to be feeble-minded morons. Dress their corpses in humiliating clothing and hang them from trees and beat the bodies like they are pinatas. Mocking Youtube reenactments of their lives. Make them an object of scorn and ridicule instead of an object of fear and I expect shootings will subside. I think we need to take the same approach to terrorism. I see the recent videos mocking ISIS as a good symptom and many coming from muslims. The British movie "Four Lions" was a brilliant way of portraying terrorism. Instead of the cold-blooded calculating dedicated mastermind terrorists we see in most movies and TV shows (looking at you 24) that make for frightening villains that movie went with a bunch of inept idiots with no coherent reason for being terrorists who have no idea what they are doing. That is the reality of your average terrorist. If we stop fearing them and start laughing at them they are more likely to wither and their recruitment will dry up. The best way to get young men out of an organization is to make it an object of ridicule.
Anijen Posted June 14, 2016 Posted June 14, 2016 I would like to keep my right to choose to not be a helpless victim. There is evil in the world and if evil has a gun, I want to have the choice to defend myself, my family, and you and your family. I believe Captain Moroni said something similar. 3
