theplains Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 There are several passages in the Book of Mormon which show Lehi, Nephi, Laman, Lemuel, and Jacob believed Jerusalem was the land of their inheritance ( 1 Nephi 2:4,11; 3:16,22;17:20-21; and 2 Nephi 10:20). Were there other descendants of the Ten Tribes living in the southern kingdom who also believedthe original design of how the land was alloted to all the tribes had been rescinded? (imageattached). Later I read in the Book of Mormon that Lehi (of Manasseh's tribe) taught another land (thoughtto be somewhere in what the LDS Church assumes is America) had become his inheritance andthe inheritance of everyone led to this land (1 Nephi 13:15; 2 Nephi 1:5; 2 Nephi 10:10-11; 19).This would include Gentiles and those of the other tribes. Did the Book of Mormon author believe the Ten Tribes would have some land in America inaddition to some land in Israel for their lands of inheritance? Omni 1:27 said, "And now I would speak somewhat concerning a certain a number who went up into the wilderness to return to the land of Nephi; for there was a large number who were desirous to possess the land of their inheritance". Why did they view the land of Nephi as their inheritance and not the other land they had journeyedto? At the Kirtland temple dedication in Ohio, Joseph prayed, "We ask thee, Holy Father, to remember those who have been driven by the inhabitants of Jackson county, Missouri, from the lands of their inheritance, and break off, O Lord, this yoke of affliction that has been put upon them". Why didn't they consider Ohio (where the prayer was spoken) as the land of their inheritance too? Thanks,Jim
cinepro Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 Why didn't they consider Ohio (where the prayer was spoken) as the land of their inheritance too? Thanks,Jim LDS interest and settlement in Jackson County, Missouri, came as a direct result of a revelation designating it as the location for Zion and the New Jerusalem. Both the Book of Mormon (Ether 13:2-3; 3 Ne. 20:22) and revelations to Joseph Smith (D&C 28:9;29:7-9;35:24;42:9, 35-36, 62;45:65-71) filled the Latter-day Saints with a zeal to know the time and place for the establishment. Elders from the Lamanite mission had traveled to western Missouri in early 1831, knowing they were near the location of Zion (D&C 28:9). The day after a significant June 1831 conference in Ohio, a revelation directed Joseph Smith and other Church leaders to go to Missouri, where the land of their inheritance would be revealed (D&C 52:3-5, 42-43). http://eom.byu.edu/index.php/Missouri

Thanks,Jim 1 Nephi 3:16 actually has Nephi and his brothers "going down" from Jerusalem to the land of their inheritance. Jeffrey R. Chadwick argued that this was a vineyard or some such in western Manasseh, that Lehi's ancestors had kept the deed to after the Assyrian conquest. Since by Lehi's day Assyrians had lost control of the territory and Judah claimed during the reign of Josiah, Lehi could have presented the deed and claimed the land. http://publications.maxwellinstitute.byu.edu/fullscreen/?pub=1081&index=3 Edited April 30, 2015 by nealr 2
