Willy Martin Handcart Co. Help

I was reading recently the story of the Sunday School teacher who criticized the lack of preparation and leadership of the Willy Martin handcart Co. and how someone in the class who had actually been a member of the company, rose and defended the overall experience and said in effect that they had grown to know God better though the extreme ordeal which they experienced.

Just wondering if anyone here might have information as to where I could find the origin of this story? Is it recorded in a journal or some such?

It was the Martin Handcart Company.  The story was published in Jan 1948 in the Relief Society Magazine, and repeated by the late President James Faust as a First Presidency Message in the Feb 2006 Ensign.  https://www.lds.org/ensign/2006/02/refined-in-our-trials?lang=eng .

It's also an urban legend. The members of the company moved throughout Deseret after arriving, there is no way the man could have known about the fate of each of them. Further, there is documentation that some on the company murmured prior to, during, and after the events (this is even alluded to in 17 Miracles). Mormon love urban legends and all kinds of faith promoting stories - true or not (you only get in trouble for them if you're a GA).
