On an individual basis LDS people are not easily put to shame.

Hard to judge on an individual basis.

On an organizational basis the LDS church needs not back away from anyone.  Their charitable giving on a per capita basis is equal to or exceeds anybodies.

Interesting. It is common for critics to complain that the Church doesn't give as much.

 

A lot of very need people are helped by those skipped meals that you so cavalierly deride.

I skip meals plenty. I don't deride skipped meals. And I think it's a fine thing for people to prepare meals for each other. Cute and lovely. Just saying it's not the best of giving, in my mind. It's great and sweet, no doubt, but in my experience most people who have meals prepared for them by their ward members or LDS friends, don't necessarily need the meals. It's a nice gesture.

 

Taking meals to someone is not the point but taking time to do something to let somebody know you care is.

Unless you have often been in the situation where meals are difficult to prepare, I don't think you can really appreciate how this small gift can make or break a day, especially if one has children.

I have and do have children. Even in the most trying of circumstances those meals prepared for me and mine weren't a necessity. A nice gesture, sure. A sweet thought? yes. A need? not really. We would have been fine without them.

I know that becoming heavily schooled in the gospel is vital to my salvation. I am not entirely sure why but I suspect if I did not that even with the spiritual experiences I have had I would have reasoned my way to hell many times over by now. That does nt mean it is required of others. We all have different needs in order to be saved.

I no longer have any patience with the idea that we should only be interested in things "necessary for our salvation". Partially because I have found that knowledge that does not seem useful often is and I have yet to find any condemnation in the gospel of simple curiosity.
