I was wondering what y'all think of the NKJV. In terms of the official LDS church, is it tolerated, frowned upon, or...? ETA: I tried to fix the thread title to use all caps, but apparently I can't edit the title.I grew up in a very old fashioned Baptist Church before becoming LDS, so I find anything other than KJV a cheap knockoff. You can use whatever you like, however if you had LDS Scriptures, you would have KJV.

I personally like the NRSV particularly for OT narrative but still prefer the KJV for poetry. I think it reflects the hebrew intent well. The nKJV is good for the NT particularly some of Paul's writings. I notice that some GA's will use different translations when it suits so I don't thing there is anything wrong with other translations.

Joseph Smith seems to have favored a German translation.Many bibles around the world are better in terms of textual accuracy than the KJV... But I like the old school language if it. 1
halconero Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 I personally like the New Oxford Annotated, which is really just an NRSV with more essays, maps, and footnotes.The KJV is the Church standard for what is preached and taught out of in group settings. I understand the reason for this though, as it provides 1) Common liturgical scripture 2) Almost everyone is familiar with it, 3) it is copyright free, 4) it provides consistency. I also like to use it for the occasional personal study, as it is a literary masterpiece, and it's language helps me feel the Holy Spirit.The NKJV isn't my favourite version, it isn't my least favourite either. 1

BUT, there are some less than stellar translations out there, like the NLT and NWT. I like the poetry of the KJV, particularly the Psalms. But it's missing books. :-) Edited July 31, 2014 by saemo
Stargazer Posted August 1, 2014 Posted August 1, 2014 Well, Joseph Smith once said that the German translation produced by Martin Luther was the best one. I happen to have one! But I definitely love the KJV. Like Pa Pa, I find the others sound like cheap knockoffs.
