Thanks for posting this.  It is a great reminder that the gospel is for everyone regardless of the choices they make.

I had the privilege of caring for my friend Paul Christofferson through his end of life as his nurse.  I met Tom and worked closely with his companion Clarke, who was Paul's primary care provider.  I also had the opportunity to meet Elder Christofferson and his wife while caring for his father.

I didn't know that Tom was gay and that Clarke was his companion until reading this article.  Tom and his Father Paul had a very loving and close relationship.  Paul never once showed any sign of favoritism or sense of pride to one son over the other, despite one son being gay and the other son being an apostle.  There was no more acceptance or love shown to one over the other.  What a marvelous man and example Paul was for all parents who have gay children in the church!  And what a marvelous man and example Tom is for all of those who are gay in the church!  I was very touched by his remarks at the Arizona LDS LGBT/SSA Conference linked to above.

Very good. As to what Manner of Men and Women Ought We To Be. Jesus said" Even as I am".

Is Tom a current member in good standing? I understand that is a personal question, and frankly in large part none of my business, I am just curious if that is public information. Has he ever stated that he wants the church to change its positions on gay marriage?

He seems like a great guy.

No. He is still excommunicated. From his talk:

As I have come to know and love the other members of my ward -– and I say “my” ward even though I have sometimes described myself as “the most active non-member of the New Canaan Ward” –- I occasionally have to remember that as wonderful as it is to feel wanted and welcomed there, “no more a stranger, nor a guest”5; the purpose of my participation is to commune with the Spirit, to progress on my road of discipleship, and to support others on their journey.

It is my understanding that he is still with his long term partner.

What was fascinating to me was that as a non-member practicing homosexual, he has been invited to share his testimony and teach high priest group from time to time. What a bishop he has.
