Shopping List Prayers

I think where the confusion comes is our definitions of "submitting" our will to the Father. From what I gather from scripture, submission in Latter-day Saint theology doesn't involve the erasure of our agency. It is not God's will that we cease being "agents unto [ourselves]," waiting humbly to hear the word of the Lord. Rather, our agency is aligned so closely with the Father that we know what we should do, what we should say, and how we should pray. In Helaman 10, the Lord gives Nephi the sealing power, telling him that because Nephi's agency is so closely aligned with his, he knows that when Nephi prays he will not ask amiss.

Furthermore, the Lord commands us to pray, and commands us to ask both questions and petitions from him during prayer. If our agency is aligned with his, we will obey this command, and seek by the Spirit and our own sanctified nature to ask that which is correct. The best example of this is in the temple, where we ritually pray as part of the endowment. We are in a Holy Place, with our wills (hopefully) aligned with each other, the temple worker, and the Spirit. Part of the ritual prayer involves praying for a list of people who are sick and afflicted. It is therefore the practice in one of our most highest and significant rituals to petition the Lord in prayer.

In short, consecrated prayer isn't waiting to hear of the Lord's will, it's having our wills so aligned with his that we will not ask amiss.
