Visits From Deceased Relatives

So the other day there was a discussion about visions people have had, and several individuals talked about talking to deceased relatives. This is a common feature found in LDS experiences (I know my family has mentioned a few). I was curious what role these experiences have played in other spiritual traditions. The best comparison I can think of would be visions of saints in a Catholic/Orthodox setting. I know that as far as fundamentalists go, they consider it "of the devil" and point to Deuteronomy where a witch shouldn't be suffered to live. Because some of you out here are very well read and knowledgeable (I'm looking at you Volgadon and Robert F. Smith) I was wondering how other Christian/Jewish traditions viewed and/or experienced interacting with loved ones who have passed on, and how are these experiences different from something like seeing a psychic or going to a seance?

In our family history someone had some kind of a visionary experience and neither participants were LDS, not yet anyways work was done for them! But it seemed to me like a beautiful experience. What is more is the deceased came when the other wasn't anticipating anything from anyone whatsoever. I get the sense that seances are the rip off, cheap version of something wonderful.
