thesometimesaint Posted November 6, 2013 Posted November 6, 2013 I like and agree with the point you are making that the way words may be used can be hurtful. Accordingly, we may do well as a society to beware and resist hurtful word usage. I believe this applies to word usage in relation to valued institutions. Thanks, -Wade Englund- Regardless of what is said about living in institutions. I like the institution of marriage. I think we should all give it more respect for its potential and credit for the tremendous good it has done. I can think of no other institution that has accomplished the civilization and propagation of our species better than it has. 1
jkwilliams Posted November 6, 2013 Posted November 6, 2013 Regardless of what is said about living in institutions. Been there, done that, didn't care for it much. I like the institution of marriage. I think we should all give it more respect for its potential and credit for the tremendous good it has done. I can think of no other institution that has accomplished the civilization and propagation of our species better than it has. Completely agree. I don't know that marriage has civilized me (well, my wife has smoothed a lot of my rough surfaces), but we definitely have propagated the species.
wenglund Posted November 6, 2013 Author Posted November 6, 2013 Regardless of what is said about living in institutions. Or "handcuffs," as JKW astutely pointed out... Thanks, -Wade Englund-
Peppermint Patty Posted November 6, 2013 Posted November 6, 2013 Am I the only one who is having a hard time following this thread?
jkwilliams Posted November 6, 2013 Posted November 6, 2013 Am I the only one who is having a hard time following this thread? I think we may have succeeded in word manipulation too well, to the point at which even we don't know what we're talking about anymore.
Rob Osborn Posted November 6, 2013 Posted November 6, 2013 The FRC uses words to hurt and destroy. So while I disagree with SSM I use words in a more compassionate fashion that respects the rights and feelings of others. God and the Constitution allow us to be jerks. They don't require us to be so. While am usually correct(IMNTBHO) on the "side" I choose to be on. I'm no hero, except to my kids, and grand-kids.What words are they using to hurt and destroy? CFR please
Rob Osborn Posted November 6, 2013 Posted November 6, 2013 When did it become hurtful to call homosexuals just that- homosexuals?
wenglund Posted November 6, 2013 Author Posted November 6, 2013 I think we may have succeeded in word manipulation too well, to the point at which even we don't know what we're talking about anymore. Good point. Thanks, -Wade Englund-
jkwilliams Posted November 6, 2013 Posted November 6, 2013 When did it become hurtful to call homosexuals just that- homosexuals? Never.
Nathair/|\ Posted November 7, 2013 Posted November 7, 2013 If you doubt that the terms wife and husband are being used in relation to same-sex couples, simply do a Google search using the parameters of "same-sex wife." Thanks, -Wade Englund-My former mother-in-law referred to her female partner as her wife.
thesometimesaint Posted November 7, 2013 Posted November 7, 2013 I certainly have never said that calling a homosexual a homosexual is a bad thing. But I know of several less than appropriate things they have been called.
Rob Osborn Posted November 7, 2013 Posted November 7, 2013 So then why do i get labeled a homophobic and a bigot in a negative sense for calling homosexuals and their acts as perversions. Is it not true that it is a perversion?
jkwilliams Posted November 7, 2013 Posted November 7, 2013 So then why do i get labeled a homophobic and a bigot in a negative sense for calling homosexuals and their acts as perversions. For the same reason you probably wouldn't like it if someone called Mormonism a perversion of Christianity. Is it not true that it is a perversion? Depends on what you think it's a perversion of. Either way, that's a loaded word that will put a swift end to dialogue. Of course, it's perfectly fine if all you're interested in is getting a chance to condemn people. 1

This is a case of making right that which is wrong. We should not sugarcoat morally incorrect acts, it sends the wrong message.

Is it not true that it is a perversion? Is it a perversion to call a apple an apple? Of course not. Is saying things like these meant to be compassionate? “The reality is, homosexuals have entered the Scouts in the past for predatory purposes.”– FRC vice president Rob Schwarzwalder, on radio’s “The Janet Mefferd Show,” Feb. 1, 2013. “[H]omosexual activists vehemently reject the evidence which suggests that homosexual men … are … relative to their numbers, more likely to engage in such actions [childhood sexual abuse] than are heterosexual men.”– Peter Sprigg, Senior Fellow for Policy Studies at FRC, on why the Boy Scouts should not allow LGBT Scouts or leaders, FRC blog, February 1, 2013. “The videos are titled 'It Gets Better.' They are aimed at persuading kids that although they'll face struggles and perhaps bullying for 'coming out' as homosexual (or transgendered or some other perversion), life will get better. …It's disgusting. And it's part of a concerted effort to persuade kids that homosexuality is okay and actually to recruit them into that lifestyle."— Tony Perkins, FRC fundraising letter, August 2011 "Those who understand the homosexual community—the activists—they're very aggressive, they're—everything they accuse us of they are in triplicate. They're intolerant, they're hateful, vile, they're spiteful. .... To me, that is the height of hatred, to be silent when we know there are individuals that are engaged in activity, behavior, and an agenda that will destroy them and our nation."— Tony Perkins, Speaking to the Oak Initiative Summit, April 2011 "We believe the evidence shows … that relative to the size of their population, homosexual men are more likely to engage in child sexual abuse than are heterosexual men."— Peter Sprigg, "Debating Homosexuality: Understanding Two Views." 2011. “While activists like to claim that pedophilia is a completely distinct orientation from homosexuality, evidence shows a disproportionate overlap between the two. … It is a homosexual problem.”— FRC President Tony Perkins, FRC website, 2010 “[W]elcoming open homosexuality in the military would clearly damage the readiness and effectiveness of the force – in part because it would increase the already serious problem of homosexual assault in the military.”— Peter Sprigg, “Homosexual Assault in the Military," 2010 "A little-reported fact is that homosexual and lesbian relationships are far more violent than are traditional married households."-- Timothy Dailey, FRC publication, "Homosexual Parenting: Placing Children at Risk," 2002 “Gaining access to children has been a long-term goal of the homosexual movement.”— Robert Knight, FRC director of cultural studies, and Frank York, 1999“[Homosexuality] … embodies a deep-seated hatred against true religion.”— Steven Schwalm, FRC senior writer and analyst, in “Desecrating Corpus Christi,” 1999"One of the primary goals of the homosexual rights movement is to abolish all age of consent laws and to eventually recognize pedophiles as the 'prophets' of a new sexual order."—1999 FRC publication, "Homosexual Behavior and Pedophilia," Robert Knight and Frank York
