Brainwashing

I remember a friend of mine telling me that my religious convictions were the result of my parents brainwashing me. I thought long and hard for a few minutes and finally said, "with all the hate, violence, degradation, sexuality and greed shown in the world today I'm grateful for parents who will take my brain, clean it and care for it."

This young Jewish man expresses the same sentiment.

I agree that Mormon culture is strongly re-inforcing, educating, supportive ... um programming. I was not Mormon until 2 1/2 years ago. So if you were raised in the covenant, then when you were growing up, in primary, young men and priesthood you sang songs and studied things that "programmed" you to think positively about yourself, to trust in the mercy and love of Heavenly Father, to expect that he will help you in times of trial. I agree with you that Mormons are programmed, but in a very nice way.

On the other hand, you could have been programmed to believe that you were worthless, inferior, unsuitable, weak, un-masculine, or even gay. Believe me the Mormons are the best people on earth.

Being a convert at the age of 20. My parents while very good people were not much of brainwashers. For me joining the Church when neither one belonged to it.

Yep, I agree and my father was not overly impressed with my conversion either. But from time to time I cringe over some things that sound awfully like brainwashing techniques. But I believe as long as we see such for what they are and are able to remain steadfast, then we don't fall in the category of testimony via brainwashing.
