Innoculating

Do we indoctinate so well that we are in affect innoculating in that way? Starting out with Primary (songs etc.), Fast & Testimony Meetings, YM and YW's, Youth Conferences, YM and YW Camps, Trek, Seminary, EFY's, Missions, then as a missionary you make covenants in the temple, you get home and find a mate and marry in the temple, and have children and those children grow up in that faith and so on and so on and so on.

Call it indoctrinate if you like I prefer to call it teaching correct principles.

You make it all sound so, ummm, clinical. Kinda like being shepherded through life as if we were cattle. Mooooooooo.

... or sheep, maybe. Baaaaaaaaah.

A lot of us often get out of line, though, so that system isn't adequate unless it's backed up with a personal testimony from God.

I don't make any presumptions at all. Its not my place to judge your efforts.

That you all would take umbrage at my post perhaps tells more than anything.

Nice reverse psychology.

I'm simply pointing out that what works for you (giving equal time) may not/does not work for everyone.

Having deeply meaningful spiritual experiences and scriptural insights does not make this 'the one true church' nor does it answer the historical/intellectual issues I have. Instead the experiences give me a good reason to continue embracing a way and view of life that is good for me. One of many possible vehicles on the path to godliness.

Indoctrinating/teaching correct principles makes some think inoculation is not needed.

The article is really making that point. Trust the leaders, don't ask questions, don't look beyond the mark, close your mind.

But that doesn't inoculate. It means that when these members stumble upon difficult history it disrupts their whole perspectives and foundation of what they've been taught.

It doesn't say close your mind. It says don't close your mind to God like the critical stuff would have you do. Give God equal time and consideration.

I'm not remembering these teachings, do you mind a CFR or some talks to read?

Hi Robert, did you ever get back to Tacenda on this. I was curious to see what the references were on this.

I was shorthanding a little what I'd covered in a lot more detail in post 54 in responding properly to the article as you'd encouraged us to.

Much of what I agree with in the article is not exclusive to Mormonism. Much of what is exclusive to Mormonism I unfortunately find myself disagreeing with. I explain which parts in the post linked above.

ERAY you stated that if one gave the Lord equal time, they would have no doubts.

I have doubts.

This is a simple 3rd grade story problem. You frankly state all with Doubts don't give equal time. I have doubts - so why act like you didn't just criticise "all" who have doubts for not giving the Lord equal time? In fact if I didn't give the Lord equal time my doubts would have exited me from the Church long ago. It is my faith that wins and leads but the doubts are still strong at times and always present

No This is what I said: "Yes really but that means equal time not just lip service".

I have doubts.

Welcome to the human family.

You have a well developed knack for expansion and reading what was not there. Please accept the attribution as your own.

Actually that isn't the extent.

Avatar said - I agree. Give the Lord equal time and you wont have any doubts

I asked him - really?

You then said - Yes really but that means equal time not just lip service.

By saying yes you sustained and made known you also agreed with Avatar's stance. And you added to it.

Sorry but avatar made a very broad brush statement, one which you agreed with. Which then makes it fair to attribute the same stance to you.
