So does storing over 1500 times the permissible amount of ammonium nitrate that would normally trigger an inspection. This was a disaster asking to happen.

Believe it or not, grain, flour and sugar can do the same. Before inspections became more common, improper wiring cased grain silos to explode killing many. They are Class II and III locations, along with corresponding Divisions, although "Divisions" only are I and II, and in 1&2.

I knew that from High School chemistry back when dinosaurs ruled the earth . Pretty much any sufficiently aerosolized material can/will burn and/or explode in a confined space when exposed to an ignition source. That being said extra care is required when dealing with highly flammable/explosive materials such as Ammonium Nitrate. Especially in Texas where the biggest industrial accident in American history happened when a ship filled with Ammonium Nitrate exploded in Galveston Bay back in 1947. Lack of proper inspections, lack of enforcement of safety rules, and corrupt corporations and their lackeys in government, plus allowing the building of residences, and schools anywhere near large concentrations of highly flammable materials is a receipt for disaster.

That plant was there first, but it still is a no brainer to not build homes and schools anywhere near a potentially explosive plant.

Let's hope that the good people of Texas do get their inspection ducks all in a row.

Ever wonder why they build houses so close to an airport... same thing... the airport is usually far out and populations grow and expand until they eventually become closer and closer to the airport. Then guess what... the people complain about airport noise... duh...

True, but airports don't blowup. We fairly recently had a fireworks plant blowup. However as it was nowhere near a residential area. The destruction was limited to that plant, dramatic as it was. When I first moved to where I live now there was a chicken egg ranch right behind us. I didn't complain about the occasional chicken crap smells. But that didn't mean I was sad to see it leave either.
