tyler90az Posted April 7, 2013 Posted April 7, 2013 The talk has been my favorite out of the two sessions I have watched so far. My favorite talks are usually about marriage and family. I sustain him and have enjoyed all his GC talks. One thing had me questioning though:"we are to cooperate and not negotiate" He was referring to "the happiest couples" in marriageIn most(95% at a minimum I would say) a couple does not agree on everything. Thus, negotiation/discussion must take place in order to cooperate. If a couple always agrees on everything/cooperates without negotiation/discussion that means one is, generally, suppressing their feelings. If one person turns into the agreeable person that creates resentment. Did I misunderstand what he was teaching? Now I want to be clear, I am not accusing him of suppressing his wives views or anything of that nature. Just from his counsel I can tell he is a better husband then I. That is what leads me to believe I am misunderstanding something.
Calm Posted April 7, 2013 Posted April 7, 2013 I would say "negotiation" is about each getting something that they want while sacrificing something else."Cooperation" is about each working toward something both want, thus neither ends up sacrificing. If one looks at marriage as a cooperation, there is no need to feel like one is being deprived, even in a good cause.
rpn Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 Perhaps he is just thinking differently of negotiating ---- if you do this, I'll do that. or If you want that, you have to do that. Real effective negotiation is finding a way that everyone wins, and that looks a lot like cooperation. But not everyone ascribes to that view of negotiation.
tyler90az Posted April 8, 2013 Author Posted April 8, 2013 He must have been thinking about my house. Negotiations here are like the latest political "negotiations."
