As someone who doesn't know the background, who is Scratch?

The person in charge of mormon discussions dot com, a predominantly critical and mostly ex-Mormon message board.

Is he actually in charge or just one of the more prominent inhabitants?

It is so absurd. I have gotten to the point where I have to do 'housework' in here before I do it in real life. Should have been putting away things and sweeping and dusting in the kitchen last night and instead I just had to tidy up things and put everything in the other thread in its proper place before I could get to sleep. :mega_shok: Edited by calmoriah

Actually, the person in charge of the message board goes by "Dr. Shades." Shades is a decent guy, and I've met him in person. In fact, so has Dr. Peterson.

There is another individual who posts as "Doctor Scratch." "Doctor Scratch" used to post as "Mister Scratch" years ago. He fashions his online persona as what he perceives to be a mirror image of stuffy, academic Mormon apologists, and Dr. Peterson has been his primary target for about six years now. "Mister Scratch" is the name the Devil uses in "The Devil and Daniel Webster." In the story, Scratch and Daniel are opponents. Apparently, they are in real life as well.

Is he in direct contact with Scratch, or does he feed things into a pipeline or network that runs to Scratch?

Don't know. Certainly indirect in many cases, but perhaps directly as well. I suspect Trevor Luke (AKA Kishkumen) is one of the intermediaries.

John Dehlin from the Facebook thread in response to the news the article would be published (probably sooner than later):

Not worried about it at all. I always knew that it would...from the start. I'm just thrilled that I was able to play a small part in the undoing of your thuggish approach -- at least in terms of its institutional sponsorship. Ya'll can do what you will with your online publication. Your audience is going to be relatively tiny, and your reputation has been significantly tarnished (as has mine).
I think he is dreaming if he believes that there will be a much smaller group of individuals who would read it now than there would have been, I suspect the reality will be reversed and dramatically so.

Remarkable to brag about tarnishing someone's reputation like that as if that is an admirable thing and how strange to follow up with a "I would sincerely love to reconcile". It is like listening to someone condemn one to hell followed by their signing off with "with you in Christ"......

John Dehlin sometimes says unintentionally amusing things when he starts getting mad and losing an argument. Here is something from Dan's facebook recently.

Now that their thuggish approach [to apologetics] has been directly and forcefully challenged and ultimately rebuked by the institution (with support of prophets, seers and revelators, no less), and I'm very proud to have played a small part in this process, even if I've been flawed in my approach (which I absolutely have). May it (thuggish apologetics) rest in peace....and may it be replaced with compassionate, empathetic, Christlike apologetics.
I was standing up to bullies....and the GA, and the president of BYU, and apparently at least one apostle, and (ahem) your [Dan's] boss apparently agreed with me.

Notice his completely false claim that the "prophets seers and revelators" were involved in Dan's dismissal. This is an ongoing lie Dehlin loves to tell. (Part of his repeated "I got Dan Peterson fired" claim.) The reality is that one GA asked that the Greg Smith's review of be not published by a BYU journal at a specific time, and Dan and Greg agreed. There has been no objection raised to publishing it elsewhere at another time, and we can expect it to appear soon. NO GENERAL AUTHORITIES WERE INVOLVED IN THE DECISION TO DISMISS DAN AS EDITOR OF THE REVIEW. This is a brazen lie perpetuated by Dehlin and his apostate allies. He has been told repeatedly that this claim is a lie. He has absolutely no evidence that it is true. (I've asked him repeatedly to produce his evidence and he consistently refuses to do so.) Yet he continues to lie. It's really an astonishing performance.

It is also worth noting that Dehlin has a perpetual compulsion to tell everyone to be Christlike. (As opposed to just showing us how it should be done.) This is rather amusing considering that John Dehlin does not believe that Jesus is the Christ. The best we can be Jesus-like, but alas he is uncertain that Jesus actually existed. All we've got is a fictional first century rabbi.

He is a rather brazen hypocrite. His self-righteousness is stunning!

But he's fantasizing if he think he has diminished readership. If there had been no scandal, the article would have been read by a few hundred people, now it will be read by thousands, perhaps tens of thousands.

He is also a poster on this board who gets the same consideration that all posters do. Continued name calling gets threads closed. There are too many threads open on this topic anyway.
