Baptism By Sprinkling

The sources that have been mentioned here, specifically the catholic answers link (http://www.catholic.com/tracts/baptism-immersion-only) opines that because there was no way that 3000 people could have been baptized by immersion on the day of ascension, THAT is when infusion (and/or sprinkling? which appears to use less water?) started.

So far I just don't see any source that identifies the original source of anything other than immersion (but then apparently catholics do not agree that the scriptures clearly state that Jesus was baptized by immersion either).

This came up in a recent church lesson and someone posited that it started because some emperor's baby was drowned when baptized by immersion and so there was official edict saying anyone who drowned another kid during one would be executed. Then someone else offered that Constantine didn't want to be baptized by immersion so he decreed that sprinkling would be the method thereafter. I haven't seen anything to support either version.

The assumption is generally made that Jesus was baptized by immersion, but I'm not sure that assumption is warranted. Maybe he was, but I don't think we can just jump to that conclusion automatically. This is from a non-Catholic source on the mode of baptism and infant baptism. It might at least offer you another perspective:

Bart, it was not my intent to declare it was the way Jesus was baptized, only that it was the way LDS believe he was baptized. For me personally, I am not particularly convinced that a legalistic approach is best. I do firmly believe that there is a proper authority needed to baptize, but the manner of baptism itself is a secondary issue.

Based on the Jewish mikveh I would say Jesus was definitely baptized by immersion. I think Swift's writing is incorrect.
