The Story Of All Of Us - History Channel

Come on now! Is this really what passes as history for most on this planet?

For those who don't know, the History Channel aired a 2 hour show last night on what they called The Story Of All Of Us, which I watched because I thought they did a fairly good job of their show called The Men Who Built America. Long story short, I wasn't impressed, and not only that, but I felt at least a little bit miffed that they were trying to pass that stuff off as "the story of all of us".

I bet even on this board we can come up with a much better portrayal of our history than that.

Anyone care to comment on why the History channel aired such a bad version of history?

Do you seriously think the world generally accepts that stuff as our true history, or was it merely the producers of the History Channel showing how very little they know of our true history?

Was this the Oliver Stone hit piece on America? He truly hates all things America...I think he was bitten by an Americian as a child.:)

No miniseries on TV can hope to even tell more than a small part of human history. Overall I felt it did a pretty good job, and find little to actually find fault with.

As a species we're only about 200-250 thousand years old. Our written history outside of a few cave paintings is less a quarter of that. The Age of Iron while we're still in it, is less than half of that quarter.

Here in Europe we can't get access to History Channel US on the internet. But we do have History Channel on satellite and they show such programs as "Ancient Aliens" that regurgitate old Von Daniken nonsense, you know, people from outer space built the pyramids and other baloney. Low budget crappola.

Okay, so you're one of the ones who buys into that which I respectfully refer to as crappola.

... not that I intend to argue with you about what you are saying here.

Another thought that passed through my mind as I watched that show was something I had heard from the first missionary of the Church I had met. She said, while sharing some things with me, : We know so much more!

The History Channel show just doesn't show as much as we (LDS) know.

And yet you do know more than you did, and that's a good thing. :)

True, but every question that gets answered produces five more questions. :)

... and then you get the correct answers to those questions which produces more questions until eventually you get all of the answers. True science at it's best, eh? :>)

Someday, but that day probably isn't today.

For some people it is, but they probably started a long long time ago.

I enjoyed at least that portion I watched. It spoke about how society changed once man learned how to "farm", instead of being merely gatherers. That because of this one discovery, humans began to grow more numerous and gather together into communities.

In my opinion, the show spent more time on the big picture: Those major discoveries that shaped the human race as we know it. Anyway, what I saw was well done. Sorry you didn't like it.

If you knew the true history of our people on this planet you would probably be able to tell how bad they did telling our story.

What really happened doesn't jive with what the producers and directors of the show said happened.

That isn't anyone on this planet.

We're still related to them, though. Don't you think we should at least say Congratulations! Well done! Hip Hip Hooray!

By "true history" do you mean the "Mormon interpretation of history"?

And if so, would you expect the History Channel to be airing a show detailing world history through the lens of Mormon belief (not much of which is proven by science; actually, science has dis-proven a number of LDS beliefs about the origins of the human race and the world).

I'm with "thesometimesaint" in CFR on this one. Your comments are vague regarding your disagreement with what the show offered. If you would, please offer what you believe our actual history to be verse what the show offered. That way we can respond instead of guessing what you are referring too. Thanks in advance!

Ugh! Do you really need someone like me to tell you that what they said happened isn't what actually happened?

The "references" I'm talking about to show what actually happend are in everything true ever written about us, and once you know what the truth is, you can then tell the difference between some fictional story.

Do you really buy into everything they said as if it is the holy grail or something like that?

Do you know where we came from? Do you know why we're here? Do you know how we got here from where we came from?

A nice science fiction adventure with people like us scattering throughout space to inhabit other planets would have been a lot closer to the truth than their story of where we came from and what happened after we got here.

Try learning from people who were there when history happened, from what they wrote down which we now can learn from. Do you at least know where they say we came from and how we started learning how to do what we can do now? Once you know the difference between fiction and non fiction maybe you'll be able to tell the difference in the conflicting stories of us.

Yes, pretty much, if by "Mormon" you're referring to what God has revealed to us. He knows because he was there, and he has told us enough about what happened to be able to tell that what the History Channel is showing isn't the way it happened.

And if so, would you expect the History Channel to be airing a show detailing world history through the lens of Mormon belief (not much of which is proven by science; actually, science has dis-proven a number of LDS beliefs about the origins of the human race and the world).

Yes, or at least a lot closer than that story they were telling. Bible believing Christians who don't believe the Book of Mormon know more truth than those story tellers were telling.

... which leads me to ask again to what I asked in the OP. Does the world, generally speaking, really believe that story they were telling is what actually happened, or were the producers of that show just sharing trying to pass their own opinions off as the truth?

I know the whole world isn't considered even "Christian", much less "Mormon", but even the stories of Buddists and Muslims is a lot closer to the truth than the History Channel story. I'm still wondering how many people really accept what the History Channel says is the truth as the truth.

I'm asking for references from you, outside of yourself, to substantiate what you posted. If you can't/won't do that retract your statements.

Please answer the CFR of where what they said was wrong or in your words fiction.

I never said I agree with everything they said. Fact of the matter is that the only person I always agree with is myself, and I'm entitled to change my mind.

I came from Walla Walla Washington. Our universe was created some 14 billion years ago in what is called the Big Bang. Of course it wasn't really a bang. A bang as such requires matter that didn't exist yet. Between 9 and 10 billions of years later our earth was formed the dust of long ago exploded stars. For many millions of years the most complex life forms on this planet were simple one cell plants and animals. Slowly over massive periods of time these life forms evolved into what we recognize today. Some 200-250 thousand years ago mankind first appeared in a valley in what is today modern Kenya. Some 10,000 years ago agriculture was invented. Then Bronze and then Iron were used leading eventually to our modern highly technological society.

Unfortunately there is little to no physical evidence for such a Panspermia beyond rudimentary proto-enzymes.

Please show the world your examples of such writing. I'm sure the world would beat a path to your door.

I'm asking for references from you, outside of yourself, to substantiate what you posted.

I said those references are in everything written which is true. If it would help you if I pointed you to a particular website or some other source of text where the truth is revealed, just let me know. I'd start with lds.org and work from there, maybe paraphrasing it so it wouldn't take so long for you to read.

If you can't/won't do that retract your statements.

I can provide all kinds of texts for you to read, or point you to where text can be found. How would that help you, though?

Please answer the CFR of where what they said was wrong or in your words fiction.

I don't have a copy of the transcript and I don't want to misquote what they actually said, but if you were to watch the show you would hear comments and I'm telling you that what they're saying doesn't fit together correctly with what actually happened. To see that, you'd have to compare what they said to someone who is telling what actually happened, and you can find text like that from anyone who has ever said something which is true... like in many texts you can find in places like lds.org.

In general, I'm simply saying that what they said happened isn't what actually happened, and rather than you looking to me for what I'm talking about you should look at texts of what actually happened and what they said happened. That's the only fair way for you to judge on this issue.

I never said I agree with everything they said. Fact of the matter is that the only person I always agree with is myself, and I'm entitled to change my mind.

I never said I disagree with everything they said, either. I'm just talking about how far off the mark they are in telling what actually happened. They do have some points right, but they are making a lot of false statements to go along with those truths.

I came from Walla Walla Washington.
Where were you before that? Before you came to Earth. Do you remember?
Our universe was created some 14 billion years ago in what is called the Big Bang.

They said something similar. What do you mean by created? Where was our universe before that? What was it? How was it created from what it was to what it is now?

Of course it wasn't really a bang. A bang as such requires matter that didn't exist yet.

Heh, they said something similar to that too. What do you mean the matter didn't exist yet? Where did the matter come from?

Between 9 and 10 billions of years later our earth was formed the dust of long ago exploded stars.

From the big bang, as you call it? How do you know that? What makes you think that? Were you there? Do you remember?

For many millions of years the most complex life forms on this planet were simple one cell plants and animals. Slowly over massive periods of time these life forms evolved into what we recognize today. Some 200-250 thousand years ago mankind first appeared in a valley in what is today modern Kenya. Some 10,000 years ago agriculture was invented. Then Bronze and then Iron were used leading eventually to our modern highly technological society.

You're going on and on as if what you are saying is true, but what makes you think that is true? How do you choose who to believe?

Unfortunately there is little to no physical evidence for such a Panspermia beyond rudimentary proto-enzymes.

Oh, really. Good thing you can choose to believe that is true with little to no evidence, though, isn't it.

Please show the world your examples of such writing. I'm sure the world would beat a path to your door.

I think you might be surprised. Maybe people don't believe the truth even when it is staring them right in the face, in print.

For examples of such writings you can look at lds.org while using key words with something to do with all that has happened.

I've read a great deal of LDS.org, It is constantly being updated so I may missed some of it. So please point out where exactly LDS.org explicitly states the Church's position on the Big Bang, age of the earth, or Evolution.

It's kind of hard to discuss something that you can't substantiate.

Websites that I use for corroboration . Sure. Just for starters

National Academy of Science... http://www.nas.edu/

American Astronomical Society...http://www.nas.edu/

American Academy for the Advancement of Science...https://www.google.com/search?q=American+Academy+for+the+Advancement+of+Science...&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-beta&channel=rcs

American Geophysical Union...https://www.google.com/search?q=American+Geophysical+Union&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-beta&channel=rcs

The Church takes no stand on a great many things including the Big Bang, the age of the earth, and Evolution.

Please provide them.

I've read a great deal of LDS.org, It is constantly being updated so I may missed some of it. So please point out where exactly LDS.org explicitly states the Church's position on the Big Bang, age of the earth, or Evolution.

Let's focus on only one issue, if you want to have a discussion about this. I'll pick evolution, if that's okay with you.

Here's a bit of what actually happened, which revelation from God will confirm, and which is also supported in text at lds.org:

Our Father and Mother in heaven created our spirits from themselves on some other planet in the heavens, and from that moment we have been gradually developing some of our innate talents and abilities, with their guidance. Part of this experience involves learning he difference between good and evil, though, so sometimes we're also guided by Satan as he teaches us or tries to teach us what is evil.

That is how we are evolving. We have never gone from being one kind of creature to another kind of creature, and the kind of being we are is the kind of being God is, even though we're not all as perfect and perfectly good as our Father and Mother in heaven.

Now compare that to what they're trying to tell us with the History Channel program... and as I already mentioned, what you can find in text at lds.org.

It's kind of hard to discuss something that you can't substantiate.

Then why do you do it? You're the one who said you had little to no evidence to support what you were saying, I think.

Websites that I use for corroboration . Sure. Just for starters

National Academy of Science... http://www.nas.edu/

American Astronomical Society...http://www.nas.edu/

American Geophysical Union...https://www.google.com/search?q=American+Geophysical+Union&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-beta&channel=rcs

A bunch of ideas from our brothers and sisters.

Why don't you go directly to our Father in heaven for answers? That's what I do, and that's what you can find in sites such as at lds.org.

The Church takes no stand on a great many things including the Big Bang, the age of the earth, and Evolution.

Not true. The Church does take a stand on every one of those issues, and all other issues, even though some people like you say it does not.

Please provide them.

I've given you a sample, which should be more than enough to get you started. I recommend going to our Father above everyone else
