Many men of many faiths (even ours, I believe) walked on the moon...none handled the role better than Neil Armstrong.

Having worked in NASA for over thirty years, Neil Armstrong is still one of my heros. I still remember watching him step on the moon in '69 and hearing Walter Cronkite saying "Hot diggity dog" when they first landed on the moon.

I actually got to meet one of the early astronauts. It wasn't Neil, but I consider it one of the high point in my life. These were really brave men. Imagine riding a bomb at 17,000 miles per hour for half a million miles with the expectation that you have less than a 50% chance of surviving.

Yes when I was born...no man made object had ever been in space. 4 months later though.

The best counterpoint to the moon landing hoax idea is that if NASA was willing to fake things up to impress us they would have had some equally impressive achievement in the almost 50 years since then.

If Mitt had posted a picture of himself looking at the moon would it be seen as equally self-aggrandizing or would it be seen as the symbol of respect and awe this picture was intended to convey?

Colonization of the moon? Manned mission to Mars? The first true interstellar probe launched? Nuking Venus? Building a giant phallic monument on Titan to show off how cool humanity is? Accelerating Mercury towards the sun to find out what happens? Near Earth asteroid mining? Building a life-sized Star Destroyer in orbit? The possibilities are endless.
