CASteinman Posted July 15, 2012 Posted July 15, 2012 Or, they could be Jacob and Joseph's age and so will marry a son of Nephi, Sam, or Zoram.I think only Zoram's children could fit that bill. Wouldn't the sons of Nephi or Sam violate Law of Moses restrictions? I want to study the text closely and see if I can make a guess at ages of these people.

CASteinman Posted July 15, 2012 Posted July 15, 2012 (edited) I have revised the original list to help me with my thinking. I have given the unnamed people in the list some speculative names and tried to identify birth dates and ages as follows:Original List...................Name.......S...Birth.. Age....Age...................................................... 597....588============================....======....==...====.. ====...====Lehi & Sariah...................Lehi......M.....645.....48.....57................................Sariah....F.....641.....44.....53__Laman.........................Laman.....M.....623.....26.....35__Lemuel........................Lemuel....M.....620.....23.....32__Nephi.........................Nephi.....M.....614.....17.....26__Sam...........................Sam.......M.....617.....20.....29__Jacob.........................Jacob.....M.....596.....NA..... 8__Joseph........................Joseph....M.....593.....NA..... 5__daughter 1....................Reuth*....F.....609.....12.....21__daughter 2....................Hadesh*...F.....604..... 7.....16Ishmael & wife..................Ishmael...M.....654.....57.....66................................Ephrath*..F.....649.....52.....61__daughter 1 (married Zoram)....Abdiel*...M.....629.....32.....41__son 1 (married - children)....Shoel*....M.....626.....29.....38__son 2 (married - children)....Dinah*....F.....623.....26.....35__daughter 2 (married Laman)....Sheerah*..F.....620.....23.....32__daughter 3 (married Lemuel)...Leah*....vF.....617.....20.....29__daughter 4 (Married Sam)......Tamar*....F.....614.....17.....26__daughter 5 (married Nephi)....Naamah*...F.....611.....14.....23Zoram (the servant of Laban)....Zoram.....M.....633.....36.....45*Imaginary Name I am using for my convenience later.(I found it impossible to use either HTML or BBCode to produce the table here)I invite comments and critiques.I note that there are two families here with at least 7.5 children in each family. (I say "at least" because in some cases there would could be more children that we are not aware of. This is the smallest list of people.)This approximately matches the number of children one would expect if female fertility would start at about 18 to 20 years of age and would continue for 25 to 30 years, having as many children as possible but losing some (up to half) of them on the way to maturity so that on average there would be one new child every 4 years starting 1 year after the age of 19:Age....Children20................124................228................332................436................540................644................748................8Next I want to postulate marriages and develop a "census" list of potential families who would have arrived in about 588 with their ages. This would be the starting point for the model. Edited July 16, 2012 by CASteinman
Anijen Posted July 15, 2012 Posted July 15, 2012 No, I was wrong. Nieces are fine under Mosaic Law.So are converts.converts=others 1
CASteinman Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 So are converts.converts=others Not really relevant to what we are looking at.
Anijen Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 Not really relevant to what we are looking at.Jacob and Joseph could have been twins.
CASteinman Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 Jacob and Joseph could have been twins. But that is very relevant and something I had not thought about. I want to look for clues to see if there are suggestions either way. Good call!
cursor Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 (edited) I found it impossible to use either HTML or BBCode to produce the table hereI would have responded by now, but I too have having a devil of a time with the table formatting. Keeping the whole table in Courier New -- padding with white periods (of same font) -- works only sometimes. Right now my table is pretty screwed up. Any suggestions on how to best handle this? Zakuska Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 (edited) http://en.wikipedia....(Book_of_Mormon)"Unlike Amlicites and Amulonites, no origin is directly stated for the Amalekites. But it is worth noting that according to the Words of Mormon 1:16, there arose "false prophets" and "false preachers," who were punished as the law allowed and many joined the ranks of the Lamanites." Keeping the whole table in Courier New -- padding with white periods (of same font) -- works only sometimes. Right now my table is pretty screwed up. Any suggestions on how to best handle this?I have no idea. It is confusing to me that the BBCode or HTML codes do not work. But I used the trick you described above and it seems to have worked for me but it took a long annoying time.MODERATORS OR EXPERTS: Question -- how do you insert Tables of Data into posts?
cursor Posted July 17, 2012 Posted July 17, 2012 I totally agree! I probably spent 4 hours messing around with [non-]formatting system, trying to submit something/anything ... I mean, even half-way reasonable. No luck.
webbles Posted July 17, 2012 Posted July 17, 2012 I invite comments and critiques.A 26 year old single male seems pretty impossible. Especially with parents that are seem to be well off. Also, why the years 597 and 588? I can see 588 since the Book of Mormon foot notes have them arriving in the Americas at that time but why 597 instead of 600? Jacob could have been born by then.
JDave Posted July 17, 2012 Posted July 17, 2012 And why is the 2nd son of Ishmael a female going by the name of Dinah? Or is that a switcheroo with the first daughter who is a male named Abdiel? 1

I will revisit that.597 is one of about 3 possible years for when Lehi left Jerusalem. But I would say that I should then be consistent and make it 585 instead of 588.Good calls. Something to work on.

LOL... THAT would be a HUGE editing error that I missed in spending the hours going back and forth with different efforts trying to get the table up on the screen. Sorry! Need to fix.
