Can The Lds Church Make Mistakes?

As to The Church making a mistake ... I suppose this is possible.

Individual church leaders at the local level are certainly capable of making a mistake. One doozy is the excommunication of Helmuth Huebener by his fervently Nazi branch president in Hamburg, Germany, during WW 2. He was subsequently un-excommunicated after the war (posthumously, because Huebener was executed), but still, that was a mistake. BTW, please don't consider that this mention triggers Godwin's Law, because you can't talk about Huebener without mentioning actual history. See Wikipedia for more info on this.

Now, let me get very tangential for a moment.

Speaking of Helmuth Huebener, he had two co-conspirators that the Gestapo also arrested, Rudolf Wobbe and Karl-Heinz Schnibbe. They were sentenced to 10 and 5 years imprisonment, respectively. Aftger the war, Wobbe immigrated to the United States and lived here for the rest of his life. My wife and I had the distinct pleasure of having one of Br. Wobbe's grandsons to dinner at our house a couple of weeks ago, as he is currently a full-time missionary serving in our ward! Way cool!
