Elijah And John The Baptist-Does J The B Fulfill The E?

I have heard recently that John the Baptist fulfills Malachi's prophecy that Elijah would come before the great and dreadful day of the Lord and that this prophecy was fulfilled in the NT. How would you argue that it wasn't and we as LDS believe that he came on April 3, 1836 in the Kirtland Temple?
