It's rather suspicious that they would not give me a reason for the suspension, but we got the server account unsuspended hopefully that will be the end of that. If there are more site outages be assured we will get the site back up. If they suspend the account again we will move the site to a different isp. We will be doing backups so if the site is sluggish for the next few hours.Nemesis

jwhitlock Posted May 11, 2012 Posted May 11, 2012 An ISP that works like that should be dumped ASAP. Lots of choices out there; some ISPs are a bit too heavy handed and arrogant for their own good.

jwhitlock Posted May 11, 2012 Posted May 11, 2012 Too bad that something like mirrored clustering over different ISPs would probably be overkill - not to mention expensive using dedicated servers. I would think that most of the larger ISPs providing hosting services would have ddos and other security features available, but that's a bit beyond my experience (I use shared hosting).Good luck with that; I hear quite a few anecdotal accounts from network admins I know about the lack of recourse - or explanation - from some ISPs for their actions. Smacks a bit of how "forthcoming" Amazon was when their cloud services failed.

Wonder if the server got hacked and the ISP went into "shoot everyone and ask questions later" mode.
Nemesis Posted May 12, 2012 Author Posted May 12, 2012 We had to up our security. The website runs on a couple of proxies that sniff/filter traffic. That scan has been adjusted to every 45 min. So its not as annoying. For right now its a necessity.Nemesis

Not having income, which is probably your model, makes it difficult to choose when the choices are limited. I'm sure you've explored all the ideas already. Being somewhat controversial (at least to church standards) I suppose that having it hosted by BYU-I or BYU-Provo is probably out of the question. Also, me being in telecom, I know how much these Internet connections can be. I don't have any ideas. If I had any free cash I'd be donating a certain amount every month. Have you guys thought about raising some money with some of the various tools out there? I've used CafePress to raise money for Reunions as well as other things. I'd be happy to help with that as well as any graphic designs that might be needed for those items. Again, just thinking if there was some sort of donated income, you could probably be a bit fore self-sufficient and not be seen as a problem if you're getting your space donated. Also, I wonder if the church would be willing to donate a certain amount every month. Again, just brainstorming here.Just a thought ... let me know if I can help.

While it seems on the surface to make sense, it could make moderation a real nightmare. Perhaps a better model would be that if you moderate, you can donate, but you're very restricted in posting.

But I found myself wondering whether the issues are that this Dehlin thread is being linked to all over the net on boards that previously never were linked. And we are apparently having a lot more traffic over all.
