volgadon Posted April 29, 2012 Posted April 29, 2012 (edited) I confess to not having read more of Grant Underwood, but I did just read an essay of his that is very enjoyable and insightful, thouh I might quibble with a minor point or two.“Millenarianism and Nineteenth-Century New Religions: The Mormon Example,” is found in "Studies in Modern Religions, Religious Movements and the Babi-Bahai Faiths," ed. Moshe Sharon, 2004.The contrast Underwood draws between Joseph Smith and the Bahaullah, as well as the different concepts of "institutional and intellectual modernization" and the "link between primordium and millennium" are highpoints. cinepro Posted April 29, 2012 Posted April 29, 2012 (edited) Grant wrote a whole book on the subject back in 1999:Suffice it to say, those 19th century LDS probably would have been really surprised to find out we'd still be waiting for the millenium in 2012! Edited April 29, 2012 by cinepro
