If the most scandalous thing that people can say about someone in public life is that he put his dog on the roof in a carrier, then this has got to be a good man. Here in the South we know dogs live to ride in the open air…how did this become news?

I lived in the South too. Few if any took a sick dog on a twelve hour trip in the back of a pickup truck(or strapped to the top of a car). It is unsafe and cruel. Show me how a man treats his dog and I'll show you how he'll treat you.

TSS has a good point about how someone treats a dog. It is not as though there are not many other reasons to not support one person over the other.

There are any number of reasons to vote for or against someone. Cruelty to animals ranks way up there for a vote against.

The term "cruelty" implies intent to harm. By any stretch, I don't think one can honestly claim that Romney intended to harm his dog.

Accuse him of neglect, carelessness if you want, but cruelty is over the top and discredits your criticism as melodrama,
