CV75 Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 Section 9 of the Doctrine and Covenants occurs during a familiar story in LDS Church history: Oliver Cowdrey, after serving as scribe for a few weeks. Apparently he tried to do something, but couldn't do it, and is told by the Lord (through revelation through Joseph Smith):He was trying to translate Joseph von Fraunhofer’s instructions to operate the newly-invented spectroscope designed for the chemical analysis of glowing objects.
cinepro Posted August 5, 2014 Author Posted August 5, 2014 (edited) My understanding was that he had parchment that was a copy of the plates he tried to translate. I wish Oliver would have stayed in the Church, perhaps he would have translated as the Lord said He could. Considering that no other Prophet since Joseph Smith has been able to either, I wouldn't count on it. Edited August 5, 2014 by cinepro
