When A Temple Recommend Is Scanned

When you go to a Temple and your recommend is scanned what information is being sent to whom? Is it like bro. Barney Boil, Blubberville, New Brunswick Stake, attended the University Temple and was scanned in at 7:34 pm to do the following... or is it a male/female was scanned in and did the following or even the following amounts of ordinances were performed? Would Salt Lake know that I attended which Temple or that a member of which Stake attended or who knows what information?

I don't know specifically what is stored, but here's what I do know.

The recommend number (in the bar code, the physical thing being scanned) is sent to the central computer and is verified as being a legiitmate recommend. If that code is declared void, it will flag it at the recommend desk—I believe the worker there will confiscate the recommend. That's why your Stake President gets a copy: he sends an electronic validation of the recommend (or perhaps it's the actual copy itself, I do not know about this part) to the Temple or Church Headquarters so the computer knows it's a good recommend. If you report yours lost, for instance, he would send in a report saying that recommend is no longer good and the desk worker would see that notation on the screen when he scans it.

Your name is returned to the monitor at the desk, and the brother there will say, "Welcome to the Temple, Brother(Sister) Xxxxx."

Some 20 years ago, we had magnetic stripes on our recommends; we swiped them at the end of every session, and the type of ordinance done was recorded along with the patron's information. That was abandoned within a couple of years. Nowadays the only record possible is that the recommend holder was in the Temple. Whether he did any specific ordinance (or any ordinance work at all) is not part of the record.
