Past dispensations

Hello everyone,

Personal circumstances have made it very difficult for me to read or study (or even get on line) for the past few days, and I can't find my BOM right now.

But I was wondering if the gift of The Holy Ghost (as a constant companion) was available in past dispensations (to Adam, Moses, David, Lehi, Nephi, etc.)?

And was sealing for time and eternity available in past dispensations (or was this an entirely new revelation when Joseph Smith received it)?

The GOTHG was available to the preChrist Nephites. Alma 9:21 for example. Adam apparently had it, Moses 6:64-68. And he also had the Melchizedek priesthood according to the same verses. So I would hazard that the GOTHG and sealing and everything else was potentially available to everyone in every dispensation but I'd say few had access to it and fewer availed themselves of it.

The Holy Ghost is manifested in every dispensation since Adam. Moses 6:51-68 / 1 Nephi 10:17-22

The Gift of the Holy Ghost did not operate in the fulness among the Jews during the years of the Lord on earth. John 7:39 / John 16:7

The sealing power was also in every dispensation when there were agents that were given power to bind on earth and seal eternally in the heavens. Helaman 10:3-10. Matthew 16:19

The power of the Holy Ghost was in full operation or else no one would believe.

I am not sure if this was also true with the Gift of the Holy Ghost.

"The Comforter" was not present before or during Christ's ministry. After he ascended into heaven he sent the Comforter to his disciples. It has always been my understanding, and I have taught, that "the Comforter" is another title for Holy Spirit; or, if we prefer the medieval language utilized by the KJV redactors, "Holy Ghost". The "Gift of the Holy Ghost", therefore, is only post resurrection. The OT and BoM Israelites never had the "Gift of the Holy Ghost", as it is given by ordinance since the resurrection began with Christ....

2 Nephi 31: 13, 14 says that yes, the gift of the Holy Ghost, including the companionship and constant companionship of the Holy Ghost, was enjoyed among them before the coming of Christ. 3 Nephi of course demonstrates how it was operative after His visit to the Nephites.

While the Bible Dictionary states that “the Holy Ghost did not operate in the fulness among the Jews during the years of Jesus’ mortal sojourn (John 7: 39; John 16: 7). Statements to the effect that the Holy Ghost did not come until after Jesus was resurrected must of necessity refer to that particular dispensation only,” it may well have been operative among the Nephites since He was not present among them during His mortal ministry.

The prophets were operating from Helaman 16 through Christ’s visit to the Nephites (covering the period of His mortal ministry) , also indicating that they had the gift of the Holy Ghost. In addition, 3 Nephi 7 speaks of baptism, remission of sins, and being wrought upon by the Spirit.

This is a bit late, but I remember correctly, the Brother of Jared had the power of sealing. I remember reading it somewhere. Related to moving the mountain perhaps.
