Any one elder could organize the church

This quote was posted on another board:

"As long as one elder remains on earth today he would have the priesthood and could organize the church even though all of the apostles and first presidency, etc., were killed off" (Latter Day Prophets Speak by David H. Ludlow, p. 213).

I don't have this book so I can't verify the accuracy of this quote or the context it may have been stated in...can anyone shed some light on this?

IMO I think keys would be needed to exercise that right. The priesthood is the power to do so but without the keys not the authority.

And that is why I need to verify this quote... We have always taught the keys of the priesthood are required for the leadership, not just the priesthood.

For this quote to be attributed to a Prophet of our church, it is either misquoted or there is more to it that gives meaning.

Yes, there would be more to the statement, whether or not he made that clear, I can't say. But yes, God would again have to give the keys of the Apostleship before that Elder could use them, otherwise we would end up being like the Catholic Church, assuming keys and authority we never were given.

Hmmm... I understand the statement as it is, but that is assuming God's plan was to re-give those keys. Of course, it's possible the statement could be in reference to the fact that we have been told that the Keys and Gospel won't again be taken from us, so, I suppose the keys could be automatically given in some form, likely to be legit it would have to be divine visitation. But, I don't think that's an accurate statement that simply by virtue of the Priesthood itself one has the authority to lead the Church. Obviously we could to a degree, but must be careful not to assume anything not given like the Catholic Church did.

Apparently it was Joseph Fielding Smith. Will try and track down which book you might find it in.

PS: I think the quote is actually "re-organize".

I could not find that quote in the book. I think that it is a paraphrase of this quote in the book:

If the Presidency were to be killed off, then the Council of the Twelve Apostles would stand in their place and preside until the Presidency should be restored; and if they and the First Presidency were all killed off, then the seventies would come forward and they would establish the order of Zion and renew the order of the priesthood upon the earth; and if all the seventies were killed off, and yet there was one elder possessing the Melchizedek Priesthood, he would have authority to organize the Church, under the command of God and the guidance of His Holy Spirit, as Joseph did in the beginning; that it should be re-established in its perfect form. So you can see that this organization is well-nigh undestructible.-Joseph F. Smith, Liahona, or Elder

The source of this quote can be found here: http://contentdm.lib...HLiahonaEJ,2264 on pages 45 and 46.

It says:

Ah, thank you! That gives context to the quote.

So it was not in the place that was cited? Latter Day Prophets Speak by David H. Ludlow p. 213.? (That book, I have found, was written by Daniel H. Ludlow)

Thanks again!

What you quoted wasn't in my copy, but it seemed to have been a paraphrase of the Joseph F. Smith quote that I referenced. My copy is a digital copy so I'm not sure if it is on page 213.
