JLFuller Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 Ode #4 No man can pervert Your holy place, O my God; nor can he change it, and put it in another place.Because he has no power over it; for Your sanctuary You designed before You made special places. The ancient one shall not be perverted by those which are inferior to it. You have given Your heart, O Lord, to Your believers.Never will You be idle, nor will You be without fruits; For one hour of Your faith is more excellent than all days and years. For who shall put on Your grace and be rejected?Because Your seal is known; and Your creatures are known to it.And Your hosts possess it, and the elect archangels are clothed with it.You have given to us Your fellowship, not that You were in need of us, but that we are always in need of You.Shower upon us Your gentle rain, and open Your bountiful springs which abundantly supply us with milk and honey. For there is no regret with You; that You should regret anything which You have promised;Since the result was manifest to You.For that which You gave, You gave freely, so that no longer will You draw back and take them again. For all was manifest to You as God, and was set in order from the beginning before You.And You, O Lord, have made all. Hallelujah.Anyone want to hazard a guess here?
Joseph Antley Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 I would guess that it refers to Yahweh, and may have some connection to Yahweh's title "Ancient of Days" in Daniel 7.
Eguzkitanedan Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 I would guess that it refers to Yahweh, and may have some connection to Yahweh's title "Ancient of Days" in Daniel 7.We all know it ain't Yahweh who is the Ancient of Days.
Joseph Antley Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 We all know it ain't Yahweh who is the Ancient of Days.Sure we know that, but did the author of the Odes of Solomon know that??
Eguzkitanedan Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 Sure we know that, but did the author of the Odes of Solomon know that??Ah, ok, it's apocryphal/pseudepigraphic. Ok, good point.
The Nehor Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 I'm ancient. The ancient one is ancient. Logically, the ancient one is me.You're welcome.
Joseph Antley Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 I'm ancient. The ancient one is ancient. Logically, the ancient one is me.You're welcome.Indeed. All future editions of the Odes should read: "The Nehor shall not be perverted by those which are inferior to it...."
The Nehor Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 Indeed. All future editions of the Odes should read: "The Nehor shall not be perverted by those which are inferior to it...."So let it be written, so let it be done.

Tribunal Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 Figured it out. The ancient one has finally been revealed, here. Why did you do that? How am I going to get that image out of my mind? That was wrong!
Sevenbak Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 Why did you do that? How am I going to get that image out of my mind? That was wrong!Sorry, doesn't everyone love the longtime liberal WH corespondent, Helen Thomas.
USU78 Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 Figured it out. The ancient one has finally been revealed, here.Oh, man . . . I was hoping for some Dr. Strange action.

Hallelujah.Anyone want to hazard a guess here?I suspect the "ancient one" is really "ancient place" = the Temple. I believe the Syriac original text simply says "ancient," with an ambiguity as to whether is and ancient person, place, thing, etc. Here's my interpretation with my ideas in square bracketsNo man can pervert [profane] Your holy place [the Temple], O my God; nor can he change it [the Temple], and put it in another place [than Jerusalem].Because he [humans] has no power over it; for Your [primordial] sanctuary You designed before [creation, and before] You made special places [lesser temples/shrines = either earthly temples, or pagan temples].The ancient [=Primordial Temple] shall not be perverted [profaned] by those [beings/places] which are inferior to [and created after] it.

It works better than mine.
