robuchan Posted December 31, 2008 Posted December 31, 2008 I think most Mormons don't believe polygamy is required or is an important element of exaltation, but apparently some on this site are big on it.Question.If polygamy is required for highest degree of exaltation, at a minimum, 66.7% of those in the highest degree will be women. The way some talk, it sounds like they believe there will be an even higher ratio of women to men. What is the rationale behind an assumption that women will be at least 2:1 more prevalent in the highest degree of exaltation?

What is the rationale behind an assumption that women will be at least 2:1 more prevalent in the highest degree of exaltation? It is because in the near future (within 10 years?) we will have the technology to allow two women to have children using their own DNA. And since that can only produce girl children we will have a whole bunch of women in the future.

Jason Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 If you had to chose between women and men as generally being more spiritual and less prone to serious sin, women would seem to me to be the obvious choice.
robuchan Posted January 1, 2009 Author Posted January 1, 2009 If you had to chose between women and men as generally being more spiritual and less prone to serious sin, women would seem to me to be the obvious choice.I've heard this said from time to time. Do you really believe this? God made men different than women, obviously. And men and women face different challenges in society when it comes to issues of sin and faith. But do you really believe women are inherently better than men? And God purposefully created them as such? That seems really odd to me that he would create men and women so different to the point that women are twice or more likely to be highest degree of celestial kingdom worthy than men. Really odd.
Jason Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 I've heard this said from time to time. Do you really believe this?Do you not believe it? I consider it fairly self-evident.God made men different than women, obviously. And men and women face different challenges in society when it comes to issues of sin and faith. But do you really believe women are inherently better than men?Not better - more prone to spirituality and less prone to what we call serious sin.And God purposefully created them as such? That seems really odd to me that he would create men and women so different to the point that women are twice or more likely to be highest degree of celestial kingdom worthy than men. Really odd.LDS theology holds that gender was always a part of our makeup, meaning God didn't decide whether we would be male or female or decide what male and female are.

They aren't inherently more spiritual and their serious sins may be different but they're there.

What is the rationale behind an assumption that women will be at least 2:1 more prevalent in the highest degree of exaltation?Since the vast majority of spirits in the Celestial Kingdom will probably be those who died in childbirth or before the age of 8, it's entirely possible that historic trends in infant mortality could support this ratio. But I think past Church leaders who taught polygamy would be required for the highest degree of the CK were just a little overzealous in their marketing of the principle. So it's not something I think about a lot.(Although I do think about what the heck the difference is between the lower two degrees in the CK. I sure wish someone would explain that to me!)
kamenraider Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 I think that the men that were understood to be candidates for exaltation were expected to go out on missions and find, teach and convert non-member women who would form a group from which they'd find their plural wives, rather than competitively scrounging around at home for them and messing with the male to female ratio there. That's what the sealing ordinances are for -- forming nuclei of heaven to go there with us.

thesometimesaint Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 It is only a requirement for those that are asked to live it. The vast majority of members of the Church were never asked to live it in this life. So there is no reason to exclude them from the highest degrees of the Celestial Kingdom.

On thing is certain, not everyone in the Celestial Kingdom gets exalted. *Often time we aren't obedient, hence the atonement and the laws, covenants and ordinances required to make good on the atonement.
