Daniel Peterson Posted October 6, 2007 Posted October 6, 2007 I'm curious: Is your reference to a spurious quote attributed to Brigham Young a reference to the following line: "I am the voice of God, and anyone who doesn't like it will be hewn down"?Yes. I was in a hurry when I wrote the letter, since I was about to leave for a month out of the country, and I didn't think that they would publish a lengthy or detailed discussion. The shorter, the better. So I simply dogmatized, concisely.
Scott Lloyd Posted October 6, 2007 Posted October 6, 2007 Obviously, so-called can be used to trivialize or, even, to implicitly deny. But I would have to be a complete fool to deny the occurrence of the Mountain Meadows Massacre, and something of a moral monster to regard it as trivial. Which goes to show some people will nearly pull a muscle reaching for the wrong conclusion, when the true one is staring them in the face.
J Green Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 I was reading Victor Matthews' book "A Brief History of Ancient Israel" today and came across the the same type of phrase:Perhaps the single most important indicator of Hezekiah's policies is the wide-spread appearance of the so-called lmlk jars. These storage jars, which contained a distinctive seal impression on their handles indicating that they were the property of the king, were only manufactured during this time period (Matthews 2002, 92).I immediately fired off an e-mail to Westminster John Knox Press to inform them that according to certain highly placed sources at MA&DB, Matthews must be trivializing Hezekiah's reforms.
Daniel Peterson Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 I trust that they'll be shocked and appalled. What a terrible choice of words!I think I'll have to loosen my corset, sit down, and take to my smelling salts.
Pahoran Posted October 11, 2007 Posted October 11, 2007 I trust that they'll be shocked and appalled. What a terrible choice of words!I think I'll have to loosen my corset, sit down, and take to my smelling salts. Dan, the image of you as a Victorian matron--tonsorially challenged and all--is priceless. I have just one question:How will you manage to fit into just one chair if you loosen your corset?Regards,Pahoran
Daniel Peterson Posted October 11, 2007 Posted October 11, 2007 I think a bus- or a park bench might just do the trick -- that is, if I can maybe cut back my intake of Krispy Kremes by, say, three dozen a day over the next month or so.
