Orange Zodiac Posted May 30, 2005 Posted May 30, 2005 Since the "spiritual wives" libel was fabricated by John C. Bennett, I put it to you that no ancestor of yours ever had such an experience.http://www.wivesofjosephsmith.org/2021-Emi...zaPartridge.htm"Soon after Emily refused Joseph

juliann Posted May 30, 2005 Posted May 30, 2005 Why should I doubt Todd Compton research? Try using it before you decide.
juliann Posted May 30, 2005 Posted May 30, 2005 And about the men being sealed to other men, it obviously isn't common knowledge because I've never heard it, and neither had my husband when I asked if he knew and we've both been active members our whole lives. Please explain or at least give me a hint where to find out about this, because it's most intriguing. I'm afraid I can't give you a specific source and I have too many books on polygamy to guess where to find it. I believe Quinn uses it in his Same-Sex Dynamics book but he apparently used it as an apologetic for attributing homosexuality so it is not his best work. Nighthawke is the one to ask for specifics.
Scott Gordon Posted May 30, 2005 Posted May 30, 2005 It is discussed in the Jaunita Brooks book on John D. Lee and there are a few references in the journal of discourses and in John Taylor's journal. I believe there is one in Journal of Discourses, Vol. 9, page 269.Generally the idea was to have all of us sealed together into an eternal family. While the idea was good, in practice it lead to some problems so it was dropped. The problems had to do with people taking advantage of their extended "families" to help farm their land, build fences and do other things. Then jealousy set in between those who had been sealed to less people toward those who had more.Scott
Ray Callis Hatton III Posted May 31, 2005 Posted May 31, 2005 No. I'd like you to stand behind what you say and document it instead of wiggling out of it when you are called on your assumptions. You claim that "Joseph Smith gave the women 24 or so hours to marry him." And yes...I want you to document what you said. I also want you to explain what happened to women when they refused after this dire threat of 24 hrs. I was able to find unsourced info about supposed "threats", it a bit cut and paste, so the commentary isn't mine;"Zina Huntington Jacobs married Joseph on October 27, 1841. He had proposed to her earlier but she rejected the idea and married Henry B. Jacobs on March 7, 1841. She and Henry had only been married a few months when Joseph once again commanded her that she must marry him. Zina wrote
Ray Callis Hatton III Posted May 31, 2005 Posted May 31, 2005 Accually, it wasn't unsourced, its supposedly from Sacred Loneliness and the quotes are supposedly from diaries. So what would have happened to the woman if she refused after said "threat" was that an angle would kill Joseph. But I think there is a bit of stretching there.
