At a fireside I recently attended the speaker asked the question, "Why do I need Jesus -today-?" He suggested that all pain, heartbreak, abuse, etc. that we experience in life will drive us to remedy it. At that point the decision is where do we turn for healing? In the case of addiction, it's to substances that numb out the pain in exchange for poisoning the body. Everyone has their own decision to make, but turning to Christ for help with one's personal pain is the one, true source of pure healing and comfort. During the fireside he also played a song called "I Wish You Pain" which suggests that one's heart grows every time it breaks. So in addition to prayer being a relationship building tool, and a way to seek to understand the mind of God in my life, it is also a way that I can turn to God for healing on my quest to become whole. 2
