Society was anything but “free.”  It was a time of rife racism and misogyny. The things we thought were so open minded and progressive make me wince now. Go back and watch some of the shows. It brought the so called sexual revolution but that was no gift to women.

It was an exciting time, however. I lived in San Francisco as Haight Ashbury was on the decline. It was great fun and  influenced  clothing, music, language, etc. However, the hippie movement was not admired by most and influential members went right back into society to become rich.

I keep forgetting, Mom isn't from here and tbh i didn't come to the lower 48s to really live till I was 13, forgot how mean people were.  That, and some of the stories mom used to tell me of how it was here.  One stuck with me, a sailor brought a Japanese woman back in the 50s, they lived in Tennessee.  The family hated her, the community hated her, poor woman had no friends.  It finally took it's toll, she killed herself and their 2 kids.

Maybe that live and let live vibe was seen in a minority counter culture like San Francisco, but in general I think we are in more tolerant days today.  People were protesting like crazy precisely because the overall scene was NOT live and let live.

Unless you were a white, male, Christian, that was not the best time to live in.

...oh, and did I mention straight? No bueno for you my friend!

Considering how my fathers family is now going to pieces ever since my Uncle died I had some bad memories come back, thanks for reminding me.  Something I keep forgetting is when I went to school in Anchorage way back when, lots of the male teachers we had were either vets who were tired of being called baby killer down here or hippies who were tired of the people you just mentioned.  Sad, I see that stuff slowly coming back, except this time I'm trying to find the justification for a lot of the racism and antagonism, people here are so mixed yet people like the KKK are still relavent.

Here's one for you next time one of your non LDS Christian friends/associates calls you out, when a group like the LDS does a better job of living traditional Judeo-Christian values than the "Proper" Christians, well it's quite the statement lol.

Also yeah, people forget just how hard the LGBT community had to fight, they still do.  Kind of ironic how in major cities LGBT are usually either quite well off or very, very poor.
